My social worker, Sophie, had decided me and her should go out to dinner after meeting Jack. I had liked her. When I got put into the system, she was brand new so I was her first kid, I guess. And right now, I was her only one, as the other two got adopted.
"Jack really liked you, you know that right?" Sophie said, looking over at me from the drivers seat.
"I don't know." I said, honestly. "I wasn't with him long enough."
"You liked him too," She says with a smile, "and you know he's a good person, weather you want to or not."
"How do you know that." I said rolling my eyes.
"You read people really well." Sophie reminds me, and I shut up, because it was true.
Weather I wanted to believe it or not, I knew Jack was a nice person. And he seemed to be good with kids.
"Where do you wanna go?" Sophie asked as we pulled into a big food court thing.
"I don't care." I shrug, looking around at the signs. "What's that place?" I point to a red and yellow sign.
"Japanese, wanna get that?" She ask pulling up in front of it.
"Sushi?"
"No it's like noodles with like teriyaki chicken and fried onions." I nod, then unbuckle.
"I wanna talk about Jack when we sit down." I nod, hesitantly. "Go head and find a seat, I think I know something you might like." It was probably true, the past 14 months or whatever, she had been my best friend.
I walk to a table that's not to far from the register. And take a seat, then pull out my phone to text Londyn, like I had promised. But I decided against it, after a minute, and decided to text Rowan a quick update.
'Hey Ro. There's a new person who's looking to foster and I think maybe adopt, because you don't usually get to pick who you foster. I've missed you guys so much. I think I might just have to show up at your house one day and surprise Londyn. Talk to you later. Ly' I felt like I should've felt weird putting love you at the end of the text message, but sitting here, I realized how much I did actually love Londyn's family. And it only felt right to tell them.
Sophie returned with food as I sent a text to Londyn.
'I think I'll try and come over soon. I miss you.' I sent the text and shut my phone off.
"I got you noodles, with teriyaki chicken, fried vegetables, and extra sauce." Sophie list, pointing to each thing of mine as she opens her own.
"Cool." I nod, taking a fork from the center of the table. "Um, do you think maybe I could go visit a friend soon?" I ask, twirling noodles around the fork.
"I mean maybe, but we can talk about that later." She assures, then continues, "Jack will be doing one on one stuff with a few of you, who he liked. You, Carter, and Maddie."
"Ok, when." I shrug, then absentmindedly stab a piece of chicken. I have a problem.
"Since you're the youngest you'll probably be first. Because he's not picking the order, Maddie's social worker is, and she likes youngest to oldest and probably sometime next week."
"Why does she get to pick?" I mumble, "What if I wanna go last or second."
"Being first is actually probably the best." Sophie points out, as her phone dings.
"I know." I sigh taking a bite of the food.
"Apparently Jack is only here for a week and today was his third day, so you'll go with him tomorrow, then Carter, then Maddie. Then the last day he'll pick."
"What about after that?" I ask.
"Then, if he picks you, you'll get to go with him for anywhere from 3 days to a week. And you'll decide if you like it, then everything will be made final."
It seems like my fate for everything is set, and I have basically no part in it.
