I remember it like it was yesterday.
It was a beautiful summer evening for a wedding, the deep purple of the setting sun only served to accentuate the gold theme of the beach wedding. The crashing of the waves against the shore perfectly complimented the melody of the orchestra that began to play. It was time for a new beginning - two families - yours, mine and now ours.
Five little children, forced into golden flower-girl dresses and gold vested mini tuxedos, myself included, marched down the aisle throwing petals and in general making a nuisance of this otherwise perfect ceremony. The groom however seemed the least bit affected by his children and soon to be step children running amok, and was too busy mesmerized by the beauty walking down the aisle - my mother. In a radiating white gown, the bride floated down the aisle, bouquet in hand, eyes transfixed on her love waiting for her by the pulpit.
My tiny two month old brother sat in the front row in my grandmother's arms, as I took my place behind the bride, next to Stephanie. She was a couple of years older than me and though she seemed like a snooty brat, she had been friendly to me, allowing me to play with her toys and making me feel less like a step-sister and more like part of the family. Across the aisle, behind their father - the groom - stood Nathan, Tyson and Jason, in neatly pressed shirts, fidgeting like the little boys that they were. I had always wanted older siblings and all three of them and within seconds of meeting me, had made me part of their childish shenanigans.
"Do you have the rings?", the priest asked, and all eyes turned to the twins. Of course they had the rings, the only problem was getting it off their fingers. Their glaring father threatening to spank the frightened twins, my mother sighing playfully at the peculiar situation, and in the panic that ensued, Nathan bit both boys on the finger and peeled off both rings handing them over to my mother.
Peace restored, the couple exchanged their vows as well as the rings and stood facing each other.
The bride and groom smiled warmly and I could see the love that had brought these two unlikely lovers together; Almost a match made in heaven. A dashing young man who had lost his love a few years ago, forced to raise four small children all by himself; A gorgeous young woman married right of college, divorced after having two children, my brother and I, and who had found true love in this man, the love of her life.
Amid fireworks above and the rising of the full moon on the starry night, the newly wed couple shared a kiss sealing not only their fate but also those of their children; Intertwining our destinies and beginning a new era in our lives as the Deveraux's.
