Chapter Two: The past
Third person point of viewRose Hathaway was bored out of her mind. She was sitting in Stan's class listening to him going on and on about protective techniques to get their Moroi out of dangerous situations, and how to keep them calm in situations that tend to cause panic. She already knew this stuff inside and out. She didn't want to admit it, but when she was on house arrest, she read ahead in some of her school books.
Rose never told anyone that she read ahead of the class out of fear of being labeled a nerd or worse studying in a subject that somehow involves Stan. She hates studying as she always somehow passes her tests.
Stan was interrupted, when someone knocked on his classroom door. She sat up straighter in her seat and crossed her feet. Stan opened the door, to reveal a small dhampir boy about the age of thirteen. He was slender, with oily black hair, and a big nose. He had acne all over his face. He looked nervous as he handed the most hated teacher a small piece of pink paper.
Stan looked at the paper before he looked around his classroom for Rose. Rose rolled her eyes, when he smirked at her from the front of the room. "Ms. Hathaway, you're wanted in the headmistress' office."
"Great," said Rose, sarcastically. She grabbed her purse and headed out of the room. She disliked the headmistress as much as Stan, but there was one person that she hated more than them, and it was the Moroi queen. The Moroi queen didn't even like her, so the feeling was mutual.
Rose grabbed her book bag and placed it over her left shoulder. She made her way down to the door from her seat and left the room. She composed her ponytail before she walked into the administrative building where the headmistress office was located. She breathed in deeply before she opened up the front door. Her nerves were getting to her, but she quickly pushed them down. Why should she be afraid of going into her office? It's not like this was going to be the first time and the last.
The secretary greeted Rose as soon as she walked into the front door. Grace, the secretary, who happened to be a freshly out of college. She was a Moroi who was only half royal. She was four years older than Rose and was a good friend of her best friend's older brother. She was pretty with strawberry blond hair with black highlights. She had brown eyes. She was tall and skinny as the average Moroi.
"Hi, Rose, the headmistress is ready to see you now," said Grace. "You can go in when you're ready."
"I don't think I will ever be ready," Rose muttered.
Grace rolled her brown eyes, "You'll be fine. You always are."
"Thanks. I guess." Responded Rose, as she opened up the door to the Headmistress office. The office was the same as all the other times she was in there. The walls were brown with pictures and plaques of fallen teachers and royals from the past ten years. There, sitting in a leather chair behind her maple desk sat the headmistress. She looked the same as ever. Her graying black hair was pulled into a bun on top of her head. She was wearing her normal reading glasses that she's always seen with. Her smile turned into a frown when she seen me walking into her office.
Rose glanced to her right and almost did a double take. Sitting on an uncomfortable chair was the Moroi queen, wearing a purple business suit that looked like it belonged somewhere else instead of this school. Her long blond hair was lying flat against her back. She had a lot of jewelry on each hand that looked expensive.
"Please sit down, Rose," said the Moroi queen.
Rose sat down on the chair that was free. She nervously put her book back down next to her. She glanced at the headmistress than at the three guardians that lined the back wall of the office. She knew that these were the queen's personal guardians.
The queen turned her head towards her guardians. "We would like to talk to young Rose, just the three of us. Can you wait in the waiting room?"
"Sure, your highness," said the guardian that was closest to the door.
As soon as they left the room the atmosphere changed. The Queen and the headmistress received a looked before they looked at Rose.
"Rose, there's a reason why we called you down here," said Titana, who happened to be the current Moroi queen.
"Am I in trouble?" Rose blurted out quickly. She was afraid that she did something that will take her away from Lissa, including becoming her guardian in the near future. She knew that she was acting differently than her normal self.
"You're not, Rose," said the headmistress.
"Guardian Belikov told us about the bond that Lissa and you share, Rose." Tatiana told Rose. She just wanted to get this over with and go back to her mansion where she could spend the day with a nice cold drink. She already had a headache from being near the headmistress for several hours.
"What?" asked Rose, with her mouth wide open? Her eyes widened at the recent betrayal. She didn't even tell Dimitri anything about the bond. How did he know that they were bonded? Why would he mention something to the headmistress and the queen? She was starting to think of Dimitri as another friend, but now she didn't know what to think about him anymore.
"We know about the bond," said the headmistress. "In fact, we know more than you and Lissa put together about spirit. This is why we wanted to talk to you."
"I'm listening," said Rose, looking right at the headmistress.
"We have come to a conclusion," said Tatiana. "We know that you're going to become Lissa guardian during in the near future. Since she is the last Dragomir her safety is her first priority. I and the headmistress came up with a plan to advance your training. More than what St. Vladimir's can offer."
"You're going to send me away?" asked Rose. She realized that her worst fears were going to come alive, and Lissa might not be able to help her.
"Send away is such a harsh word," said the headmistress, with a smile on her face. "Besides, I thought you wanted to be Lissa's guardian."
"I do," said Rose. "But I didn't know that I was going to be away from her."
"We have two guardians down south who have a lot of training in fighting Strigoi, than your mother," said Tatiana.
"It's going to be an advanced field experience," stated Tatiana. "You're will be protecting someone, while you're taking two different types of training from two guardians. It will be hard work, but it's going to prepare you for being Lissa guardian."
"Who will I have to protect?" asked Rose as she sighed in defeat.
Tatiana smirked. "We have that planned out already. It's going to be neither a Moroi nor a dhampir, but you're going to protect a human by the name of Sydney Sage."
Roses' eyes widened. "A human that knows our secret is the person that I will be protecting?"
"Yes," said Tatiana. "She's an alchemist. They work closely with our world to cover up tracks in the Moroi world."
"Oh," said Rose.
"You will leave tonight," said the headmistress. "You have time to pack up your clothing and things. You can say goodbye to your friends and you can tell them about the mission, but you can't tell them where you will be going. You will find out where you're going when you're get on the plane. Are there any questions?"
"No," said Rose, getting up from her seat.
