"You're mother says she's very sorry that she couldn't be here today to see you off, she had a meeting she had to attend." Wendy Jackson tells Adeline Warner as the two stands at the train station. Adeline nods and shrugs her shoulders nonchalantly, knowing this would happen. Again.
"Ah, well. I'm not surprised that she's not here, she's always busy." Adeline states calmly. Wendy looks at her with pity in her eyes, knowing all too well that she was sadly used to her mother not being there at important times like these.
"I'm very sorry, Adeline. I am sure that she misses you. Promise me that you'll write to us, if not for her, for me?" Her nanny asks her, pulling her into a hug.
"Of course I will. I'll miss you, but I think I need to get aboard soon, before the train leaves without me." She pulls away from the hug and grabs the handles of the metal cart and waves to the older woman. She weaves through the crowd and takes her trunk and the metal cage off the cart and boards the train. She finds an empty compartment and settles in, watching through the window at the happy families saying goodbye to their children.
Beside the door nearest to her stand a family of three, a young boy with light brown hair, a tall man with grey hair, and a shorter woman with brown hair like her son's that is starting to grey at the roots. The boy hugs his parents and exchanges a few words between them before disappearing from the scene. She shifts her view towards a mother with curly red hair hugging her daughter, who looked a few years older than Adeline. She averts her eyes away from the window and onto her lap, where a small kitten lay curled up asleep.
The boy she had previously seen with his parents suddenly stands in the doorway of her compartment, asking to come in.
"Well, of course you may! There's quite a few empty seats in here, I'd be happy to have company." Adeline tells him and he sits down on the bench across from her. His brown hair hangs slightly over his forehead, and his skin is covered in scars and bruises.
"I'm Adeline, is this your first year as well?" She asks politely.
"My name's Remus, and yes it is." Remus tells her. She nods and continues to try and make small talk. Being homeschooled, she never had much experience when it came to talking to others, as she never got to talk to the children in her neighbourhood. But now that she was out in the world, she knew it was time to hone in on her social skills.
"That's cool." She says, as her conversation skills begin to fail her. She thinks of what to say, but comes out empty handed, so she just resolves the problem by simply dropping the conversation. She stares out the window for a while, looking at the scenery, before slowly drifting off to sleep.
"Adeline." A voice whisper shouts in her ear, causing her to jerk awake.
"Whoa, relax. I just wanted to wake you up so you could get changed before the train stops. I'll leave you be." Remus tells her calmly before heading out of the compartment. She opens her trunk, pulling out her black robe with the school's crest of arms embroidered on the chest. She was already wearing her uniform so she just slipped into the robe and closed her trunk again. She steps into the hall and gestures for Remus to come back into the compartment, but she notices another student staring at her in awe before she can get back inside. Adeline's eyes widen and she quickly goes back inside before anyone else can see her. She sits down and buries her head in her hands, letting out a muffled groan.
"Oh goodness." Adeline mutters to herself, knowing all too well why the student was staring at her. Only on very special occasions did her mother let Adeline tag along with her on her business trips, but when she did, she was introduced to the paparazzi snapping pictures of her and her mother together. The fact that Kendra Warner had a child was always so shocking to people, because not many knew about her outside of her nanny and mother. But the first time that she went on a trip with her, it was easy to tell that the two were related.
