I'm just going to say this ahead of time; I'm very passionate about this.
Who here has come across a fanfiction where, I don't know, a gay character magically becomes straight?

Now I'm gonna let you in on a little secret. The characters are gay for a reason.
For example, ALEC LIGHTWOOD.
(So passionate about this because I read the books before the TV show)
Alec being gay is a huge thing for him. It gives him struggles and it also gave him conflict with his parents. IT MAKES HIM WHO HE IS.
Now if you were to change the fact that he was gay, he wouldn't be the same person. It'd be like completely changing who he is, and personally I don't care for a fanfic where the characters are completely different.
I also understand this could work the same for a straight character. But we don't know if they're actually straight unless the author or producer specifically says they are. Just because you've only seen them with someone of the opposite gender, does not necessarily mean their straight.
BUT IT COULD. OKAY?
An example of this could be, I don't know, STILES STILLINSKI.
Just because he's only ever been shown as having interest in two girls, does not mean that he's straight. *whisper* Sterek!
They never specifically said that he was straight. SO THERE YA GO!
