I really didn't concentrate very much on anything the professor said. My mind was too distracted by the mystery boy. I pondered feverishly about him actually getting me the drink or if he was just kidding; a prank of sorts.
I mean, why in the world would a guy like that try so hard with a girl like me; short, unflattering, shy, weird, nerdy me.
I sighed, both in relief and in anxiousness, as the professor finished up his lecture. I packed up my stuff and trickled out with the rest of the students.
My heart was pounding in my chest, my nerves completely on edge. Was I really going to go meet some stranger, who hit me, so that he can apologise by buying me a beverage.
Yes I was, I decided. Taking a deep breath, I blew out softly, trying to calm my nerves in the process. With determination and probably a steely look in my eyes I made my way to Brickhouse.
On the way I reassured myself and came up with alternate scenarios. For example if he wasn't there, I was NOT going to get angry and then have a nervous breakdown. Instead I was going to tell myself that I didn't need some insolent jerk to buy me a Chai Latte and I could do it myself. Then I would buy it and walk out of there with my head held high.
In the event that he does come I was NOT going to have a freak out session and start babbling and bumbling. Instead I was going to kindly accept my drink before wishing him a good day and walking out of there with my head held high.
Arriving at Brickhouse, I didn't see him outside. Already my hope was giving away, but I remembered my plan of action and walked into the coffee shop. After a quick sweep with my eager eyes I realised he was not there either. My last bit of excitement drained out of me and my shoulders slumped forward. I made my way to the counter, not wanting to look like an idiot by walking in and walking out again; besides I really did want another Chai Latte. I ordered my drink and as it was being made I pulled myself together, determined to walk out of the café with not a care to give. The bartender handed me my hot beverage and I accepted it with a thank you as I made my way to the paying counter. I had just gotten out a ten dollar bill from my pocket when someone burst through the café door.
"Wait!" The all too familiar voice of the Little Devil yelled.
"I'm paying for her drink." He panted, bending over to try and catch his breath.
The inhabitants of the café which had all previously stopped to see the commotion, looked at him, shook their heads and muttered before turning back around. Just like that everything was back to normal, except for the out of breath boy next to me who was pulling out a ten dollar bill.
"Why'd you try to pay?" He asked looking slightly hurt.
"You weren't here. I honestly didn't think you would show, but you know some part of me hoped. Anyway, when you didn't pitch, sure I was disappointed, but I was prepared. So I ordered and was going to pay." I explained.
"But I promised I would buy it for you." He pressed on, a frown etched on his face.
"Yeah, and it was really sweet but I don't really believe people keep their promises." I shrugged.
Before he could reply the bartender interrupted,
"Would you like anything?"
His question was pointed at the Little Devil. I really do need to find out his name.
"A cappuccino please,"
"Coming up," The bartender replied with a nod.
"Well, I keep my promises." the Little Devil said, turning back to me.
"That's nice to know." I replied, a ghost of a smile on my face.
"You don't trust me." He stated, giving me an incredulous look.
"I don't trust anyone." I said softly.
Before he could reply I carried on,
"Thanks for the latte, you've definitely redeemed yourself. Bye."
And with that, I hurried away. No need to waste anymore of his time with my depressing talks.
He called after me but I pretended not to hear him and made my way up tomy dorm.
