To say she was shocked would be an understatement. Elizabeth had never suspected that she would have a grave problem about her health.
No one in her family had and she always took care of her health. Sitting on the hospital bed, she thought about what Dr Wilson said to her about her symptoms. He had taken a sample of her blood for a test to confirm his hypothesis.
The door to the hospital room opened, breaking her trail of thoughts and she looked up as Dr Wilson approached, a concerned look on his wrinkly face.
"How long have you been having these headaches and respiratory problems, Miss Curie?"
Quickly calculating the days in her head, she answered
"Since three weeks, I think"He looked at her grimly before saying
" You have been diagnosed with cancer. I'm really sorry to say this Miss. Curie but you only have about four to six months before the disease kills you. I'll prescribe some medicines for you to lessen the pain in your chest and head. Do you wish for me to inform your family or will you do it yourself?"The words rung in her head and she managed to utter only a few words
"No I'll do it. Thank you doctor."
The latter nodded before reminding her to come for her usual check-up.Walking toward the hospital pharmacy, she tried keeping her tears at bay as she purchased the medecines. Then she sat down on a bench and tried calming herself before she called her aunt.
"Hello Eli? What happened at the hospital? What did the doctor say?" Her aunt bombarded her with questions once she picked up her phone.
Her aunt, Maria was a cheerful forty-eight year old lady. With dark brown hair and warm honey coloured eyes, she was the definition of home. Elizabeth had the same dark brown hair as her aunt and her late mother, but she inherited her late father's piercing green eyes and fair complexion. But unfortunately she did not inherit his tall height, being at only five foot four inches. When she was only seven years old , Elizabeth's parents had died in a tragic car accident, leaving her in the care of her aunt. Now, ten years later, she considered her as her own mother.
Eli trembled as she narrated everything that happened in the hospital to her aunt who was already crying. Maria Cadem, sister to Eli's late mother, Margaret Curie, was never married and had no children, so Eli was practically her child, and after hearing what was happening to her adoptive daughter, great grief clutched her heart.
Once Eli had talked to her aunt, she decided to go home as it was nearly dark. She did not have many friends, but she would inform her best friend, Abigail later tomorrow.
As she walked down the road to her home, she could not help but admire the sunset. The way the sky was covered with splashes of orange and pink, and puffs of white. The chirping of birds and the sound of crickets were like music to her ears. It was nearly dark when she reached the woods that lead to her's and aunt Maria's home. But she felt no fear as she had spent most of her childhood days playing in these woods and she also knew that there were no harmful animals in her peaceful little village. She was only a few metres from her yard when she heard a crack in the distance to her right. Thinking it was only a dried branch breaking, she continued her way, except the rustling of leaves, this time nearer and barely hearable, stopped her. Curious, she approached the woods,
'maybe it is a lost animal needing shelter or food' she thought.Elizabeth had a fondness of animals. At home she had two dogs, Bouba and Peanut, a tortoise and a bird named Cricket. She also had a few colourful fish in an aquarium.
Once she was in the woods, she looked around, expecting to see a wounded or lost animal, but was met with an erie silence. Uneasy, she turned around and started heading to the house quickly where aunt Maria was probably worried sick, when suddenly she heard footsteps behind her.
"Well well well! What do we have here?"
She whirled around, shocked and scared. A few feet away from her were two men, as their silhouettes said. It was too dark for her to make out their faces but she could see that they both wore dark clothes and each had a black coat.
Terrified, she took a few steps back.
"Who are you?" She meant to say it confidently but her voice cracked at the end.
The thought of her alone with these two men sent shivers down her neck."You shouldn't be alone so late darling. There are "- he glanced at his friend before continuing -" things that roam these woods. Dangerous creatures"
"I've known these woods almost my entire life. There are no such things here. Who are you and what are you doing here?" She was getting more frustrated and scared by the second.
The men, as if sensing her fear, grinned at each other.
"Fiesty. I like it. She'd be great Dan."She decided to name them goon number one and goon number two. She did not know much but she could fight a bit since she had taken lessons when she was ten but then had to quit at twelve. She could also run pretty fast since she went running everyday.
Taking the opportunity she turned around and sprinted toward the house. She had gone only a few metres when she felt arms circling her waist. She could not understand how they had managed to catch her this fast seeing that they were quite a few feet away away from her and she knew that she had ran fast.
No time to debate over this, she started trashing, squirming and screaming in his arms, hoping that her aunt would hear and make it on time to her.On hearing her shout, the man clamped a hand over her mouth.
"Bring the sedative" goon number one said to goon number two.Her eyes widened when she realised that they were going to sedate her and she started trashing even more. Goon number one grabbed her long slightly wavy hair and yanked it to the side, exposing her tender smooth neck. Tears gathered in her eyes as he ran his nose down the length of her neck.
"Damn! I wish I could get a taste of you. Unfortunately you are to be deported unharmed."
Taking the syringe, he pierced her neck and emptied the liquid.
Elizabeth tried to fight the drowsiness but unfortunately the darkness swallowed her whole as she lost consciousness.
The last thing she heard being along the line of great money and her aunt screaming in the distance.
