Crane Maiden {A Nalu Fan Fiction}

Chapter 8

3rd POV

Somewhere, deep in the woods, was a grave made out of multiple stones stacked on top of each other. Engraved on one of the stones in sloppy writing was the name: Igneel .

Lying next to the stone grave wrapped neatly was a scarf with a dragon like scale design, and Natsu. He was sitting on the ground and quietly staring at the grave. Tears were visible as they rolled down his cheeks, but his eyes held no sign of life- they were cold and blank. Today marked the day when Igneel left Natsu's world permanently.

Flashback

It was a couple of years since the disappearance of Igneel. Natsu was all alone staring into the dying embers of the fire when he heard a knock on the door. There stood a person with a bag stuffed with scribbled pieces of paper who was brandishing a neat letter addressed to him. Letting a grunt of thanks and in return giving the person a few coins, Natsu closed the door.

Once he saw who the letter was from, Natsu didn't hesitate to rip it open. Inside the envelop was a crumpled up paper with chicken scratch written upon it, however it was still legible. Natsu sat near the fire for light and read:

Dear Natsu,

You're probably wondering where I went. I'm really sorry I left you without any notice- it was so abrupt. I feel... so bad for leaving you and then finally contacting you after all these years. I broke my promise- my promise that I will stay with you no matter what. By the time you read this, I'll probably be dead. As I write this letter I'm sad to say I am on my death bed. I know I don't deserve to be called your father, but I just want to say I'm proud of you my boy. You have given me so many reasons to be so proud of who you have become, and thinking of you being alone all these years...breaks my heart.

Don't become a weak, foolish man like me Natsu. I who left his only family member behind. Keep you're head high and keep on living. I'm so proud of you.... I'm sorry....

End of Flashback

Lucy then appeared out of the brush, breathless, clutching her hand into a fist. She saw Natsu kneeling over a gravestone. Could that be...? She thought. She quickly rushed over to Natsu and hit him hard on the head with a stick, causing him to fall forward holding his head. "YOU IDIOT!" Lucy roared with rage.

"W-what the heck?!" said Natsu as he turned around, still holding his head, to see a very angry Lucy.

"You can't just tell me to... to get out of you life and then just suddenly leave!!!"

"Why do you care you crazy woman?!" Natsu retorted.

"I really really care care about you, you idiot and for some reason I feel really really happy around you!! I promise that I will never leave you! So don't you dare tell me to leave you all of a sudden!" replied a flushed Lucy.

Natsu stared at the ground, his bangs shadowing his face, "That's what they all said..."

"What?" asked Lucy.

"My mom, my dad, my friends... they promised they wouldn't leave me. But look what happened. They all left me. The only people who didn't were Gray, Juvia, and Wendy... Watch you are going to break your promise too..."

Lucy clenched her fist into a ball, then place a hand over her heart, "Well I'm not like the others!"

"Pft," Natsu chuckled. "Then hear this Lucy. I'm at the point in life where I'm done with everybody feeding me lies, that I'm just used to it. People talking behind my back. You don't think I'm hearing all those people in the market talking about me?  So many promises in my life were broken. Promises will be broken even though they were promised. The truth is, I don't care anymore, it hurts and it's too tiring. I'm used to it though. I feel as though I'm trapped alone in the darkness....all alone." Natsu's eyes began to water. 

Lucy stared down at him, sad that her best friend was in so much pain and going through him by himself.  She kneeled down next to his crumpled, shaking form.  "Then I'll be your light.  So don't be sad.  You look much better when you smile," she said and gave him a gentle smile,  "I'll be there for you.  Always." 

"Yeah..." Replied a trembling Natsu.  Tears slid down his face as he said, "Always."
