It was a peaceful late summer afternoon, a slight occasional cool breeze the only hint that fall was on its way. It was the kind of a day that makes one happy to be alive.

It would take only a glance around the comfortably bustling courtyard nestled beneath the towering walls of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to note that it's many students were indeed enjoying the pleasant weather. Small groups of first years chatted away, clearly enjoying the break from rushing anxiously through the maze of a castle attempting to make it from classroom to classroom in a timely manner. In a corner, what appeared to be an older Gryffindor student was playing chess with a Ravenclaw and losing horribly, while still maintaining an impressive amount of dignity.

It truly did seem that all of Hogwarts was calm and at peace that afternoon.

Unless you were Peridot.

All the students in the courtyard stopped and turned their heads curiously as an agonized screeching noise quickly came into earshot, soon joined by the slapping of footsteps on stone echoing through one the spacious hallways leading outside. They barely had time to share awkward glances before the cause of the sound sprinted outside into the summer air, immediately losing its footing and falling rather ungracefully onto the grass below in a heap.

Hushed murmuring conversations started to sprout from the crowd as the students watched, waiting for the small figure to move.
Finally, a second figure appeared in the courtyard entranceway behind the first, looking down amusedly.

"C'mon Peridot." She smirked, holding back a fit of giggles, "You can't just lie on the ground like that forever."

The first figure groaned miserably into the grass, raising a hand to ruffle small remnants of soil out of her short blonde hair, "Jus' watch me. My life is oveer!"

The second girl raised her head from the pathetic girl on the ground and observed the staring crowd around them, "Hey, what are you guys looking at? Ain't you ever seen an existential crisis before?"

In response to her shout, the surrounding students gradually turned away from the scene and soon the courtyard was ringing with the sound of conversation once again. Once the girl was sure no one was still paying attention, she kneeled down beside her friend and sighed,
"Peridot. It's okay. You didn't know--"

The slightly smaller girl on the ground groaned loudly and raised her head from the grass, her pale bespectacled face now smudged with dirt, "I should've known! Who doesn't know what the Slytherin Quidditch captain looks like!"
The taller girl snorted in amusement, clearly holding back another bout of laughter.
"Amethyst! This is serious!"

"I'm sorry! It's just--" she giggled, " You really embarrassed yourself. And her."

Peridot groaned again and dropped her head back to the ground in shame, "She   hates me now."

Amethyst rolled her eyes, easily pulling her smaller friend into a standing position and began to dust her off, "Well, look on the bright side!" She started hopefully, "She had no idea you existed before, and now she'll never be able to forget you! Ever."

"You don't understand!" Peridot whined, "I've had a thing for her ever since the sorting first year! I just--" she lowered her gaze to the ground, a slight blush dusting her freckled cheeks, "How was I supposed to know she was so.. Menacing now?"

"Peridot." Amethyst raised an eyebrow quizzically, "You've had a crush on her. For four years?"

"So?!"
