"Lani!" My mom called for me from downstairs.

Okay, first step.

I carefully stepped down counting each step, ever since the accident I've been terrified to ever go near the stair case, and when I had to I always counted each one. Sometimes after dinner I would be to scared to walk up them and go sleep in my room, so I would sleep on the couch.

His deceased body laying by my feet, broken neck and blood everywhere. The memory's flashed through my mind.

Don' t think about it. I told myself.

"Leilani, the movers are here." My mom spoke softly. She knew how scared I still was and always decided to avoid conversation about my dad.

I grabbed my bags and moved away from the stairs to let the movers lead themselves up, one by one they gathered the boxes upstairs and placed them in the back of the moving truck.

"Lani lets go." The tone in her voice was smooth and made me feel calm. I nodded and walked outside to our car, tossing my bags in the back and closing the door.

"Mom you think I could go say bye to David?" I asked.

She looked at me with a sympathetic smile. "Yeah of course."

Without looking back I raced across the street and down the block. There I was met with his house.

David and I go way back, but for now all I want to do is tell him that I'll miss him and that he better not replace me because I'll be coming back.

I ran up the stairs and rapidly knocked on the door. My breathing increased and my hands shaking. Slowly the door opened.

There stood the boy I never thought I would have to say goodbye to.

"It's time already?" He spoke. His once strong and soft voice now sounding weak and fragile. Tears brimmed his eyes, mine already breaking free and rolling down my cheeks.

"Yes." I let out a loud sob and shoved myself into his body, wrapping my arm around his middle. His arms wrapped around my small frame.

"Leilani-" His voice cracked as he tried to continue.

"David, I promise ill come visit." I cried into his shirt squeezing the material on his back.

"And if you can't, I'll come to you. I promise." He rubbed my back trying to calm me.

"You know I thank your dad everyday. Even when he was here, if it wasn't for him I would've been laying dead in that surgery room four months ago if it weren't for him." He spoke quietly.

That night I almost lost my best friend to drunk driver.

"Me too."

"Lani I love you, you know that." He said pulling me from around his body to look me in the eyes.

"Yes, I love you." I nuzzled my face into his chest again taking in this moment.

The love we spoke of was not the relationship love. It was the brotherly sister love. We tried dating once about three years ago but it didn't feel right, so we decided it'd be best to stay friends.

"I don't want to go David. I'm scared."

"You're scared here too." He was right. I was scared here, I think I would be scared no matter where I go. Having to know that wherever you go your past could follow, repeat itself. Every time I walk up stairs I know I'll get that feeling in my stomach, where the bile rises and I have to swallow away my tears.
