It was late in the afternoon on a hot summer day. Faruq sat on a boulder a few meters away from the river. He had removed his shoes and socks, and his legs were covered with cool sand on the Riverbank. He felt relieved that way.

The weather was hot, and usually when he felt hot, he came to the riverbank. Occasionally, when he came he would swim to cool off, but mostly, he sat on this particular boulder and dipped his feet into the cool sand.

The gentle breeze was cool and refreshing. Faruq did not know how often he had thanked Allah that he lived within this vicinity. His home was just a stone throw from here; he was lucky he lived near this mini-beach.

Some people lived near the river but had no access to place like this. The River Niger passed through many countries and cities, towns and villages as it journeyed from Futa Jalon Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. The life of every people who lived along its route might not be complete without it, different people surely have various reasons for their attachment to the River Niger.

As far as Faruq was concerned, it provided refreshment for him. Whenever he was tensed up, he would come right here and his tension would ease away. He loved the beautiful scenery, the solitude, and the cooling effect of the environment.

The width of the River Niger had been increased drastically when it joined the River Benue. The point of confluence was at lokoja and from there both Rivers flow together towards the ocean.

This confluence having increased the volume of the river, also increased the density of the vegetation around it, and perhaps the number of animals in and around it too.

Faruq loved everything about the river, and unless he was out of town, he came here every other day. Even during those times when the river flooded its bank,he came and stood at a safe distance. Therefore this afternoon, when he had felt terribly uncomfortable with the heat, which was compounded by power failure since morning, he had naturally come here to ease away the tension.

He had been alone for the past one hour. When he came, he had meet two young men swimming, but they had finished and left a long time ago-from his sitting position he could see whoever was coming to the Riverside without himself being seen.

So when a young woman came dragging herself towards the River, he saw her. He noticed her absentmindedness. He did know who she was, but it was obvious that she was in pain. She looked pale and weak. She stopped a few yards away from the water, still deeply engrossed in thought.

Then she moved slowly and walked right into the River. Faruq was taken aback. If her intention was to take a swim, then this was an absurb way of doing it. She was fully dressed and was walking in water as if she was on land.

As she got deeper and deeper into the water he wondered if she actually knew what she was doing. Then it happened. She threw herself violently into the depth of the River and out of sight. Faruq got up on his feet. He was astonished. No sane human being would dive into a River like that.

But he wanted to be sure he was not making a wrong conclusion. So he waited for a few seconds to see if she would come up. She did, but she was gasping for breath. She was not up for two seconds when she heavily down into the water again.

She fought hard to remain up but could not. Obviously, she did not know how to swim and was already drowning. Faruq needed no one to tell him that this girl was on a suicide mission. He plunged into the River and swam towards her. From the back he was able to catch hold of her and forcefully dragged her out of the water.

Thank Allah that she was not bulky. When she was out of danger and on the sand, he tried to force water out of her stomach, and then he put her on his back and headed home.
