Faruq came into the room where his strange guest was lying. The doctor had said that she would be alright by the time she wakes up. He said she seemed to have been in shock. He had given her some tranquilizers, and that had put her to sleep. For what seemed like the hundredth time, Faruq came in to see if she was awake, but she was still asleep.

After bringing her home the previous afternoon, he had immediately called in the doctor. At first, she had struggled violently but when the doctor gave her a tranquilizer, she calmed down instantly. He then gave her the necessary treatment and requested that she should be left to rest. He said the injection was going to keep her calm for approximately eight hours.

He also said there was nothing to worry about as far as her health is concerned, and that she was out of danger. But she had been sleeping for more than ten hours now and had not shown any sign of movement. Could the doctor be wrong about her state of health? Suppose she died? He wondered. Faruq still had no idea who she was or where she came from. When he saved her yesterday, he had no time ti think properly. Otherwise, he should have taken her straight to the General Hospital and alerted the police. That was the proper thing to do. But he had not done that.

Instead, he came straight home to his mother, and together they called in their family Doctor. The doctor had not insisted on taking her to the hospital either, but he thought it was wise to alert the police in case of eventuality, even though, he could not foresee any complication as far as her health is concerned. But Faruq had not called the police. He had decided that he would wait until she was in the right frame of mind to tell them who she was. But now it seemed so long that she had been sleeping and that made him restless.

His mother, Hajiya Khadija came in just then.

"She is still sleeping," She observed.

"Maybe i should call the police, i am getting impatient over this long sleep." He said worriedly.

"Oh please, the doctor said she would be okay. Besides, he must have her a large dose of that drug. I am sure she is going to be alright" His mother said.

"I hope so," He said, and followed her out of the room.

A few hours later he went back to check her again. This time, he noticed that she had turned on her side. For a moment he thought she was murmuring something. He stood still. Then she opened an eye, then the other. She stared blankly into space. Gradually, her vision cleared and she saw herself in a strange room.

She looked around lazily, and there was a man standing by the window watching her. She looked at herself and discovered she was in strange clothes.

"What am I doing here?"
"Who are you?" She asked in a quick succession.

Her voice was weak but it had a desperate tone.

Faruq was relieved that she was awake atlast.

"You are asking many questions so soon. Relax, when you have regained your strength we will..." he was saying but she cut in quickly.

"I said who are you, and what am I doing here?"

"Well, you were rescued from drowning yesterday, you were violent. So the doctor put you to sleep,"he told her.

Her forehead squeezed into a deep frown. She tried to recollect what had happened. Then like a flash of lightening, she jumped out of bed and headed for the door. It was so sudden, and before Faruq could realize what was happening, she was out of the room. She did not know where she was or how to get out, but apparently, her brain was very smart because in no time, she was out of the house and heading for the gate. Faruq hissed and ran after her.

He shouted something to the gate man but he too understood what was happening the girl had ran passed him and out on the street. This was the government reservation area(GRA), and she knew that the river was a few hundred metres from where she was.so she ran directly towards it.

Faruq was amazed by the speed at which she ran especially since she was supposed to be weak. But he increased his speed. He had to catch up with her otherwise she would throw herself into the river again, and perhaps she might not be lucky this time around. He knew there were dangerous zones even close to the bank where large stones adorn deep gullies. If she entered the river through any of these zones, she would be injured or killed instantly. But it seemed as though she wanted to die anyway. It was by luck that he was able to catch her a few meters to the river. She struggled to free her hand from his grip, but he held on.

"What do you think you are doing? Are you on a death mission or what?" He asked, gasping for breath.

"Leave me alone!" She exclaimed. "What is your business with me? I said leave me alone!" She was shouting and struggling to be set free.

"Whatever your problem is, the solution is not suicide. You can solve your problem only by living." He tried to admonish her.

"Leave me alone!" She said once more. She felt tired and dizzy but she struggled on.

"Please leave me alone, i dont want to live anymore." She pleaded amidst tears.

"Alright, you follow me back home first. A doctor is coming to see you. Then when you are stronger if you insist on suicide you will be on your own"he told her.

"Oh please let me go! I said i do not want to live. What is your concern anyway? You dont even know me," she ranted on.

"My concern is that you are a human being and it is unfair to allow you take your own life. If i had seen you in the act, it would have been a different case. But i have seen you attempt suicide, i can see also that you are unmindly of your action, so i will not leave you alone" he was saying when she suddenly went blank and collapsed on the ground. She had become very weak and was breathing forcefully.

"See what you are doing to yourself," he said in frustration, not knowing whether to carry her or just leave her there and go away.

Then the gateman appeared. He had followed them to see what was happening. So he helped to carry the girl back to the house. The doctor was called in afterwards and she was put to sleep again.

"You have to be careful in this matter. I still think you should inform the police so that you do not implicate yourself in case of eventuality." The doctor advised Faruq, when he was going.

"Dont worry doctor, i think publicity will not help this girl much. She must have been through some terrible situations, or perharps she is running away from something dangerous. So informing the police might not be helpful." Faruq said.

"Well, if you say so. But you must be vigilant so that she does not escape," the doctor said.

"I will, thank you doctor." He said as they shook hands.

For the next two days, the doctor came in every day to see how the girl was responding to treatment. When she tried to be violent, he calmed her with drugs. Along the line, Faruq and his mother preached to her about the undesirability of suicide. Eventhough they had no idea why she wanted to kill herself, they knew she was in some kind of problem.

It was not easy taking care of her. One of them had to be around constantly to keep an eye on her. Although they did not know her or her family, they took proper care of her until she was back to her senses. Perharps, at the end of it all, she would share her sorrows with them. She was obviously just a teenager, and teenagers could take decisions as fatal as suicide when they were really pushed to the wall.
