Dax looked at his sister, who was sleeping peacefully in her bed, and he sighed to himself. He would never bring her back to the asylum, he would never do that to her. It had been their parents that thought it was best to put her there, to hide her away from the public’s eyes. He loved Devony too much to do that to her.

He pulled on his vest, dressed for work and then took Devony’s car to the supermarket, knowing he was going to be scolded for being late, not that he cared much what the owner said, he could not fire him under an agreement Dax’s parents signed with him.

Dax was stocking the shelves down one of the aisles when he felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned, expecting some older woman, shaking, asking him to reach something on the top shelf. He was shocked to see it was a woman, a very beautiful, young woman looking at him. Something about her looked dangerously familiar, but he had seen her under different lighting last time. Her white eyes looked at him with confusion.

“Um…I'm not sure where to find the rice.” She said, smiling softly. Dax narrowed his eyes at the woman, she could not be serious. Last night she had been ready to allow her friends to beat a girl unconscious, and she expected him to believe this innocent girl act? “Do I know you?” She asked, frowning.

“I was the one who stopped your friends from beating that girl last night.”

“Oh! That is why you are looking at me like that!” She laughed. “And those girls were my sisters, not my friends.” Her eyes were drawing him in, begging him to trust her. “I am sorry about that, I do not usually allow them to be so foolish, but you see that woman was beating up my sister, the small blonde you saw, and I could not let the happen, I am very protective of my sister, I am sure you understand.” She said, and Dax did, he would kill someone for his sister.

“I guess…” He mumbled, not sure what else to say. Dax had not realized before that he was awkward with women, or at least women as beautiful as the one in front of him.

“Your name is Dax?” She asked, and his eyes narrowed. “Your name tag.” She said, pointing to his red nametag. “Mine is Nym.” She was dressed in tight pants, high-heeled boots, a very elegant shirt and her make-up looked as if it were done professionally, this was not the type of woman that usually shopped at his supermarket, she was much more high class. “Oh, I'm sorry, you must be working!” She laughed to herself. “Now, all I need is rice.”

“It’s at the end of this aisle, on the bottom shelf. How much do you need?”

“Well, we are having a dinner party tonight, so a lot I suppose.”

“Do you need help carrying that to your car?” He asked, not sure why, maybe it was because it was his job to make a customer happy, or maybe he wanted to just make this customer happy.

“That would be very helpful!” Dax somehow roped himself into helping the woman shop for her dinner party. As he was walking her to her car, a Cadillac SUV, and helping her load her things, he could feel her studying him. “Do you want to come tonight?” She asked quickly, as if unsure of herself but Dax got the feeling that this woman was never unsure of herself.

“I am not sure that would be the best idea.” Besides, he had Devony to look after.

“Why not? I mean, I could prove to you that we are not the barbarians that you met last night, we really are good women.”

“I have my sister to look after…” He said, hoping she would drop the topic. He did not want to say no to her, but he did not really want to go to the party either. Last night he had been strong and confident only because he had been defending someone, now he had no purpose and no confidence.

“Well, she can come too! You can bring your girlfriend if you wish, it is not anything important, just a few friends coming over and having a good time.” She smiled.

“I don't have a girlfriend to speak of, but I will ask my sister if she wants to come.” Nym looked slightly disappointed

“I'll save two seats.” She said, pulling a notepad from her purse. She wrote her address down and a time, and handed the paper to Dax. “Please come, I don't want you to think my sisters and I are these horrible people.”

“I'll consider it.” She jumped into her SUV and drove off. Dax thought to himself as he walked back into his work, why would a woman like that be so interested in him? She was clearly used to being on top of the food chain, while Dax was some scavenger. There was nothing that Dax could offer her, not even an attractive partner, the only thing he had was his soul and he doubted she wanted that. Dax thought about her as he continued his work, and he realized that she intrigued him also, he had never spoken to someone who seemed to have it together, who was of higher class, and he considered what her life was like. While Dax was not necessarily lower class, he had not had an easy life.

As Dax clocked out, he realized that Nym had not really expected Dax to say no, she knew he was coming tonight and so did he, he just had to make sure Dev was up to going.  He parked the car, and sighed, thinking what had he gotten himself into by defending a complete stranger.

He walked up to his door, and he could hear Devony singing, because she had opened all the windows in the house, allowing the autumn breeze to seep its way inside. When she sang, it was usually a good sign for how she felt and so far, the song sounded cheerful.

“I'm home, Dev.” He said, opening the room to find Devony sitting on the couch, her legs crossed and staring at the TV, humming a tune.

“Hey, how was work?” She asked him, tearing her eyes from the TV.

“Fine…how are you feeling?” Dax asked.

                “Why?”

“I was invited to a dinner party by one of my costumers, I've met her before and she thought it would be a good idea for me to come, she invited you also.”

“Oh, a girl?” Devony smiled. “I would love to, I feel perfectly fine!” She jumped up, excited. “Oh, wait!” She groaned. “I have a test tonight, I can't go!” Devony was attending college online, trying to get her degree in literature, to become an author.

“Oh, well, I can stay home then.”

“No, you will not! You will be going.” She smiled. “You go have fun, I will be fine.”

Dax did not really want to leave his sister alone at the house, be he knew that she would not let him stay now that he told her. Dax changed from his work clothes, to skinny jeans and a dark half-sleeved shirt. Was he really going to go to this thing? Some sort of warning bells went off inside of him about Nym, but he decided to ignore them, he decided that he had been living safe much too long, and what was the worst that the high class, soft woman could do to him? He was almost twice her height and she seemed harmless enough.
