Annie leapt up and began running-Faster and faster so that she couldn't hear her own breathing. Her footsteps were louder and began to pick up pace with every breath she took. Annie didn't stop- she just kept running on, not knowing where she was going. The trees were a blur as she ran, but she knew the figure was still behind her. The chill sent down her spine was telling her so. The frost crept up every vine and branch that is could, absorbing all life. Annie could hear the harsh, raspy breathing of the creature, getting louder as if it was running out of breath, but it didn't slow down. They kept running for what seemed like half an hour, the figure right on Annie's tail, ready to pounce the moment she stopped for breath.
Despite her fast speed, Annie could see up ahead. The numerous trees that had stood tightly packed in rows, casting gloomy shadows had abruptly stopped, and Annie found herself nearing a dusty clearing. Although it was painfully dark, she could see a vague outline of a building in the near distance. She estimated that she would have just enough power to run to there and stay there for the night. After all, what else could she do? She couldn't turn around!
She kept pushing herself on. Each stride sent a pain searing up her leg, until she reached the door of the building. It looked derelict and abandoned. The brickwork was blackening and eroding and the windows were boarded up by splintering pieces of long wood nailed in crosses so that only the smallest beams of light could find their way inside. The door looked as if it had once been blue from the light of the eery moon, but the paint was beginning to peel. Annie placed both hands on the brass door knob and began shaking it violently. The sounds of the creature behind her were horrific. Like it was sucking it's breath in waiting to absorb the life and soul and happiness in her. The rattle of the door was becoming hard to hear over the wheezing of the figure. Annie could feel the air coming out of its ghoulish 'mouth' prick at her ears. Annie knew she was done for and collapsed in a heap on the floor, burying her head in her hands. Suddenly, everything went quiet. Everything around Annie was black. There were no longer small jewelled stars encrusted in the peaceful sky. Is this what dying feels like? Annie thought. It was much more peaceful than I expected.
