Chapter 1

I, Azula Montinez, and my sister, Saphira, were what you called privileged. We were the princesses of a remote island near Australia, basically a speck on the map most people overlooked. But, no matter the size of our island, we had a perfect life. She and I got to do basically whatever we wanted whenever we wanted. Our activities were ranging from reading all day, to riding our beloved horses, to swimming in our gloriously blue water beaches, or anything else we pleased. Our mom was, obviosly, the queen. My dad who had been the king had died when I was four and Saphira six. The greedy king of a neighboring island invaded and took many, many lives, including my father's. However, we barely remembered him. Saphira remembered more, but I only had the stories of his happy, caring, and benevolent life. Fourteen years was a long time to remember something, and he had sadly become a picture in a frame to me.
Anyway, enough of the past. Currently, Saphira and I were preparing for her coronation. Yeah, you heard right. My mom was stepping down and letting my twenty year old sister become queen. To say Saphira was ecstatic was an understatement. I was thrilled too, of course, but not like her. She was practically having a panic attack everytime they rehearsed the crowning. I honestly was more excited about the massive feast afterwards and the gorgeous dresses we were wearing during the whole ordeal. She was going to be dressed in a long fluffy purple gown with a white sash spreading from her right shoulder to her left hip. Her honey brown hair was styled elegantly on top of her tan head. I would be in a green gown very similar to hers. A pink sash would be on my shoulder. My dark brown hair would be plated with green ribbons down my back.
My mind was yanked back to the practice when the trumpets announced my sister's arrival in the hall. I looked up from my musings as I smiled reassuringly at Saphira. She came through the doors, practicaly glowing with regal beauty and sophistication. She however couldn't hide the childish smile that covered her face as she walked down the aisle towards the throne. The coronation may not be for three more weeks , but that didn't damper the immense amounts of anticipatiom that filled every person in the room. I was to simply be standing next to the throne smiling as I waited for her, yet I still felt nervous. Mother stood on the other side of the seat, pride radiating off her in waves. Music played in the backround as an announcer proclaimed our names over the microphone while another man simply yelled at the others to do their jobs.
A loud buzzer sounded, catching me of guard. "Take a break!!" Mr. Richards, the royal planner, yelled. Everybody froze as we all let out a sigh if relief. I climbed down the small flight of stairs and ran to my sister, kicking off my heels along the way. I grabbed her hand and began to drag her away. Saphira laughed and began to run next to me after ditching her own shoes as we headed to our horses, Tony and Kent,  who waited outside the auditorium. Tony was a brown horse with a few white spots dotting his back. He was Saphira's 'baby'. Most pampered horse I had ever met. Mine was Kent, named after Super-man. He was a black friesan horse. I was a fan of D.C. comics, while Saphira prefered Marvel. One of our few disputes was which comic was better . It always ended in an annoying tie.
We didn't know much about the outside world due to the isolation of the island, but we made sure were were kept up to date on comics and movies involving both worlds.
Before we even managed to grab our riding gear off the steads, Saphira and I were stopped by the wardrobe master. (That's the nickname we gave him as a joke and it stuck) He was a young man of twenty-seven years with short dark hair spiked up. He gave us a cheeky smile as he began a conversation, as always, involving his outfits.
"So how do the highnesses like their dresses? Do they fit well?" He inquired as he circled us to see it for himself.
We nodded. True I hated the delay for horse riding, but i did love fashion. I excitedly proclaimed, "Yes! I love how you got it the perfect green!" People rarely figured out I like a combinaion of neon green and forest green. They always went one way or the other, never picked the middle like i liked. He smiled approvingly, then turned to Saphira.
"I love mine too! It's a pretty lavender shade!" Saphira trilled then gave a twirl to show him.
He laughed. "Perfect!! I will let your highnesses get back to what you were doing." He bowed then sauntered away.
As we finally began to gather our riding gear, one of the palace guards came running into the court yard. Saphira and i exchanged a look before following him with our eyes. He made a beeline straight towards mother. He talked in a hushed tone as he explained something frantically.
Our mother's eyes widened, and fear flashed across her tan face. She met Saphira and my eyes for a brief second. Just enough time for us to catch the look of sheer terror in her brown eyes. She then turned and yelled out to the other guards.
"Secure the area!! We are under attack from the neighboring island! Get into your assigned places!" She did not wait for them to acknowledge her orders before she ran over to us.
"What's going on, Momma? Who's attacking us?" Saphira frantically asked, grasping my mother's sleeve. Mother was shaking. Not answering, Mother surveyed the surroundings.
Her eyes landed on her target, and a spark of hope flickered across her face for a second. "General Jackson!" Mother yelled as he ran by. He turned towards us, relief flooding his features. He quickly changed directions and ran towards us.
"We need to get you all out of here. To the helicopter." He demanded and began ushering us all towards the royal helicopter. General Jackson's tone of voice turned my insides cold. I had never heard him so stern and... scared. If the immovable and practically emotionless general I had come to know was this scared, then i should be downright hyperventilating. Now that I thought of it, I wasn't far from doing that. Saphira didnt look much better. She was pale and skaing like a leaf.
"What's going on? Mother!" I shouted as we all ran out the gates, heading towards the loudly running helicopter.
I shared a brief glance with my sister before we came to a silent agreement. Saphira and I stopped and turned around, refusing to move until questions were answered. We had done this before on occasion, and it had earned what we wanted. Now it only garnerd looks of exasperation.
Mother groaned before glancing around. Then she began explaining. "After your father died and the enemy was defeated, I knew the King there would attack again. I knew that you two were our only hope, so I set up a safety procaution. If he ever attacked again, I'd be able to hide you somewhere safe." She then stopped walking, tears glittering in her eyes. "General Jackson will take you from here. I must stay here. I love you."
Before we could say a word, General Jackson began herding us towards the waiting Copter.
"Wait!" I screamed, actually fighting against General Jackson.
"We can't leave you!" Saphira sobbed, punching the General's chest. She was all we had left. How could she and Jackson expect us to be cool with leaving her?!
We watched as she blew us a kiss and waved as we were forced into the Helicopter. Tears streamed down my face as I reached a hand over the General's shoulder. I wanted my mom to stop this and come with us. I wanted to stay here and every thing to return to normal
Jackson grabbed my hand and pulled me in. He closed the door and sat both of us struggling girla down fhen strapped us in as we fought to get away.
I wanted to know what was going on, where we were going, and who was this mysterious bastard king who had ruined my entire life in less than five minutes.
