<KEVIN>

"You wrote Harry Potter fanfiction?" he asked incredulously.

"Yeah. I did, " she snickered. "And it was good!"

"Wow. And I thought my Harry Potter costume was hardcore." He noticed that their iced teas were empty and waved over the waitress for a refill. "More please!"

"Actually," The waitress approached with a weary smile, "We're closing in five."

"Oh?" Jennifer and Kevin just looked at each other. Their conversation was still hanging in the air.

"What time is it?"

He had a watch on his wrist but he didn't want to look at it.

"10:53 PM." The waitress responded without a pause. "Will it be one bill or two?"

"We can split." said Jennifer. "Two bills please?" she asked the waitress.

"You didn't have to do that." Kevin murmured, as he held the door open for her and left the restaurant.

"Yeah I did. I hate it when other people pay for me." She took a few steps into the night and spread her arms like a eagle. "It's so breezy! I love the summer."

"Really?" He walked beside her at a slow pace. "I prefer the cold of winter."

"What?" She giggled. "You're absolutely crazy."

"That I definitely am."

He didn't want to think of the end, but he had to.

Eventually they'd reach the subway station and say goodbye right?

"So are you taking the subway from Queen's Park?"

She looked at him with bright eyes. Jennifer seemed pretty content to be walking.

"No. I'd rather just walk to Union."

"Alone?" he smiled, pretending to be surprised. "Can I come with?"

"Certainly sir. Your wish is my command!" She extended her arm and pretended to be a pompous gentlemen.

"Aren't the lilies just lovely this time of year, dear," she continued in a deep, wacky voice.

"Yes, yes they are! My heart is fluttering at the thought of them," Kevin responded in a high pitched voice.

They laughed and let go of each other's arms, casually talking about funny things they'd heard about or known.

"The best news article I've ever read was about a fugitive penguin in Tokyo," she chortled. "It was so funny!"

"A fugitive penguin?" he asked. They were only a hands' width away from each other. He could almost feel the heat emanating from her body. "Did it steal some fish?"

"Haha! No, it escaped from the zoo and was taken back but," she held up a finger. "Not before it splashed around Tokyo harbour and scared all the civilians."

"Wow. Godzilla's got nothing on this fellow!"

She thought Union was at least 30 minutes away.

The walk felt like it lasted five minutes.

"Is this goodbye?" said Jennifer, taking a few steps ahead of him and turning back.

He shrugged. There was a good buzz between them and he didn't want to break it.

"I guess so." She faced him and stood barely an inch away from his face. "Bye."

"Bye." Her eyes searched his.

<KEVIN>

His heart leapt to his throat. It was now or never.

The moment moved on without him.

"Okay." She stepped away and began walking. "Bye."

"Wait." He grabbed her hand and gently pulled her forward. "One last thing."

And closed the space between them.
