They led us into the barn and inside of the barn there was one light at the top of the building coming in from the sky where there was a big hole. The gun was pushed against my back, and I jumped and realized I had frozen at the door when the rest had just walked in. I looked behind me and Mr. Jim looked at me and motioned me to move forward. I walked in and began to ease my way to a corner, behind people and out of sight. I looked around every inch of the building trying to find holes and nooks or crannies that I was small enough to fit into. It didn’t look like a spider could get through into this room.
I quickly found out I was wrong because I saw a spider crawl its way out of a bowl, and I looked up so I wouldn’t have to see it anymore.
“Alright,” he said,” you guys will have your breakfast soon. I would tell you to sleep, but there is no use for that. You will start working in an hour. If any of you try to escape, I will kill you.” He said dramatically before slamming the door and we heard some kind of lock snap shut. It was silent and we all were glaring at each other’s unclear faces under the moon. A girl dropped to her knees and began to cry. I looked at her with pity and walked over to her and wrapped my arms around her.
“it is okay,” I said, silently,” everything will be okay.”
“I wish that were true.” She said back, sobbing.
“It is true. We will all survive this.” I rubbed her back soothingly and after a few moments she calmed down.
“Thank you.” She said after a few moments. “My name is Xeina.” She said the familiar name and I registered it with her face. I smiled at her and helped her off the floor. When we looked up everyone else was looking at us.
“How about we introduce ourselves again to, um what’s your name again? “ The thicker girl in the middle who got slapped earlier said. She looked at me expectantly.
“My name is Kiara.” I said, and in a circle we all went around and introduced ourselves and shared our stories about how we were ‘found’.
We all sat in silence in a complete circle for a few minutes. I looked around at all my fellow captives and frowned.
“I need to get out of here.” I said, and everyone looked at me.
“We all need to get out of here,” Nyla said, and everyone nodded in confirmation.
“If any of us try to escape, we are dead.” Fletcher shouted. I looked at him with a frown at the harshness in his voice.
“We have to do something,” Brealla said, softly,” I can’t just sit here and be someone’s slave.”
“Then, we have to escape.” Nyla said, and the door opened.
Mister Jim came in with a big bowl in one hand, and a bunch of little bowls in another hand. The big bowl had steam coming from it and it smelled like hot water. He placed a little bowl into the big bowl and scooped out what looked like cooked mud. I wanted to ask what it was, but fear kept me from it. He repeated the scooping process in all bowls and then handed each of us a bowl.
“You guys have fifteen minutes to eat,” he said, and then without another word he left and slammed the door shut.
“What the hell is this?” Ashley asked.
“This is cooked crap bricks,” Fletcher grumbled and everyone shot him a glance.
“You know,” Nyla said,” we better all eat this and keep our strength up because when it is time to get out of here there is no time for being lazy or weak. We have to be strong. I think we can all be strong together.”
