It smelled like dumpster. Even as I opened my eyes it was dark. Where was I? There was a musty smell, and I couldn’t figure out what it was. I took in a deep breath and immediately started coughing.
“She’s awake,” I heard somebody whisper. I got up quickly and backed away from the voices. I saw nothing. There was a sound of an engine running as if I were in a car. I looked around and saw a glint of light coming from beside me. I tried my best to look through it and I saw nothing but what looked like concrete road.
Then suddenly I remembered having cloth taken over my face and passing out. I couldn’t breathe and began freaking out. I looked around and started trying to feel for a door handle or something of some kind, quickly. I felt the walls of the van until my hands were touching a face, and I screamed and fell backwards. When I fell, I fell on top of another person.
“Oh my goodness!” I screamed, and tears splattered out of my face in a sporadic manner. “Help!” I screamed and started banging on the van. Before I could scream for help again, a hand went over my mouth and I was pressed against another person. I started trying to hit them, but they were too strong.
“If you don’t be quiet he will kill you,” the male, but young voice whispered into my ear. My eyes widened, although nobody could see them, and I began to cry some more.
“Please be quiet,” the voice said again,” everything will be okay if you just don’t scream.”
“Where am I?”
“You’re inside of a van.”
“He took you from the side of the street.” Another voice said. I tried to look around and six shadows of heads came to sight. I looked out the little glint of light and saw that we were no longer in the city. I must have been knocked out for hours.
I tried to do some fast thinking. There had to be a way to get out of here. I tried to see if I could stand up because there were no chairs or anything in this van, just empty space. I stood up and started walking. I calmly, avoided all the shadows and felt the doors for a handle. The handle wasn’t there. It had been removed. I told myself to take a deep breath and I couldn’t. The breath came out shaky and I began to cry again, quietly to myself.
After a few moments of silence, aside from my sniffling, I felt an arm go around me. This was a different person. They were bigger than the guy from before, and when they pulled me into a hug, patting my hair down, I realized it was a girl. She smothered my face into her chest that was now wet with my tears.
“Where is he taking us?” I asked. “Why is he taking us?”
“I don’t know,” the girl said,” we have been driving around in this car for a week. Some for a less than that since he has been adding new people to the group. You can’t freak out. We have to stick together.”
“I don’t know you guys!” I shouted. “I want to go home! I can’t stay here! Let me out!”
“Shut up!” some guy griped at me. “I mean, if you want to die, fine, but maybe the rest of us enjoy breathing.”
His harsh tone made me silence myself. My hands were shaking and the girl grabbed them, trying to calm me down.
“My name is Ashley,” she said quietly,” when the sun is in here, you will see Fletcher, Nyla, Kiara, Terrance, Brealla, Charm, and Xeina.”
“He took seven kids?” I asked.
“No,” she stated bluntly,” he took way more than that, but seven of us remain. It has only been seven days, and three people…” her voice trailed off and I felt my breaths getting shorter as I realized what she was trying to tell me. She tried to settle me down, and physically I did, but mentally, I couldn’t stop freaking out. I was going to die. This was it for me. I would never see my mother or father again.
