Chapter 4
three days later..
My sister Ashanti, and her boyfriend Kobí
was the town's favorite couple since grade school. They had been dating for 6 years. Nobody ever thought they would make it this far being so young, but they and did it. Kobí was also on the schools basketball team with me. We got along pretty well considering the fact I didn't like nobody my sister ever dated. He treated her like a princess, made sure her hair and nails stayed done, took her shopping, and listened to her problems. He was everything a girl wanted in a guy.The sophomore's had a game later that day.
Ashanti made sure she was at every game Kobí had, whether she had to work or not she was there. Me on the other hand, I was too busy focused on my own career. I only came to the see who was gonna be the next Morgan Parks basketball star. When I got there the game had just ended and my sister and Kobí was walking out the door. "Wassup y'all, how was the game?" I said as I hugged my sister and shook Kobí's hand. "Try getting here on time and you would know." My sister said as she pushed me off her. "I went to check on mama, I would tell you how she doing but you wanna be a smart ass so never mind." I responded.
"Boy stop playing and tell me how she doing!"
I still haven't quite told my sister about our mom having cancer, and possibly dying. It was still unreal to me and I couldn't bare to see my sister so hurt.
"She doing better and might be coming home soon.. real soon." I said.
Her face instantly lite up and she screamed with joy not realizing when i said home I meant as in heaven."Thats good news baby, lets go back to my place for drinks." Kobí said.
Even though I approved of Kobí and my sister dating, I still didn't like him.
"Nah, I think I'ma pass, the NBA tryouts in two weeks I need to be practicing." I said.
"Practicing at 10 at night? Yeah right, come on." He said as we walked out the gym. When we got there, his house was a mess. There was dirty t-shirts and socks all over the couch and a box of pizza sitting on the table like its been there for days. "Marcus, Is that your shirt?" My sister said as we walked in.
I gave her a puzzled look and said "Where?"
She walked over to the couch and picked up a blue polo shirt off the floor and held it up "Right here, ain't this the shirt mama bought you for your 17th birthday.. I remember because you hated it so much." She replied.
I quickly walked over to her and grabbed the shirt "Oh yeah, I guess i left it over here earlier when we was practicing, Right Kobí?"
"Huh..Oh yeah he came over earlier before the game to teach me some new moves." Kobi said. "How he came over earlier when Marcus said he went to check on our mama? "One of y'all motherfuckers lying and better speak up now!" Ashanti said.I felt as if i was slowly stepping on a bed of sharp nails, my biggest secret was slowly coming out and i didn't know what to do. Not only had i been keeping the cancer situation a secret but i had been keeping a even bigger secret for over 2 years. Chicago's favorite couple wasn't so loyal, and the "dream guy" every one thought Kobí was to Ashanti, he really was to me.
