Jake stared blankly at the sky, dizzy and disoriented, and he quirked a mental eyebrow when he subconsciously compared the night sky to the pale grey sky he looked up at 4 months ago.

*FLASHBACK*
Zone 2, Atlanta

Lieutenant Jake Carter arched a perfect eyebrow as the driver of the blue Toyota Corolla in front of him tossed a fast food bag out of the window as they sat at a stop sign. The blonde eased his unmarked gold Ford Crown Victoria a little closer to the car and lit him up, blue and white concealed lights bursting to life as the two cars pulled into a vacant church parking lot.

"Dispatch, 218Lima-Zebra22 forming a traffic stop on the corner of Lily Avenue and Webb Avenue, 1995 blue Toyota Corolla, Tennessee tags Lincoln-XRay-414-Victor, standby." Jake mumbled into the radio, setting it in the seat as he got out of the car. One hand braced on his Smith & Wesson M&P .40, he stepped up to the Corolla's driver window...
And never got a chance to react when a .32 caliber revolver was pressed into his abdomen and the trigger pulled. A fist of pain shot through Jake, and the cop fell with a guttural groan as the blue Toyota sped away. The bullet had gone through and through, because he hadn't put his kevlar vest on when he got out of the car, and Jake tried to put pressure on his wound and crawl back towards his cruiser.

His shoulder radio squawked suddenly, as if by magic, reminding the cop that he had the ability to call for help right there on his body, and he let out an almost sigh of relief as he collapsed onto the ground and keyed the shoulder unit's microphone.

"Dis...Dispatch, 218Lima, officer down. I've been hit, corner of Lil....cor...corner of Lily and Webb, requesting assistance." Jake gasped, rolling onto his right side as blood oozed out of his left.

"All units, all units, officer has been shot, corner of Lily and Webb, any unit respond code three. Additional on the officer down, any available unit, vehicle wanted in connection is a blue 1995 Toyota Corolla, Tennessee plate, registration Lincoln X-Ray Four One Four Victor. Driver is considered armed and dangerous."
"No kidding!" Jake hissed to himself, rolling onto his back to stare up at the grey August sky. He heard sirens in the distance, but he wasn't sure if they would reach him in time, and even though it caused him excruciating pain, Jake removed his phone from his pocket and typed out a simple text with one blood-covered finger.

I love you son -JHC

*END FLASHBACK*

Obviously, he survived that little escapade. This one, though, he wasn't too sure of his chances.

His ears were ringing, his head was throbbing, and his vision was blurring, but Jake pushed himself up to his knees and scanned the parking lot through the sights of his gun.

"Zack?! Are you alright?" Jake could barely hear himself speak, but he knew he was yelling.

Zack was lying flat on his back, head spinning as his father crawled over to him.

"Are you alright?!" Jake visually scanned his son for injuries

"I think so, Daddy." Zack nodded his head shakily and sat up.

"Stay down!" Jake pushed his son back down, and then pointed to the building. "When I say go, run for the gym, got it?" Zack nodded and pushed himself into a crouch. "Go!" Zack took off, and Jake was behind him, running backwards and scanning the parking lot through his gunsights, stopping when he and Zack were back inside the doors.

"This is Captain Jake Carter, Atlanta Police, badge four-nine-one-zero. I'm at Centennial High School, and I require Fire, EMS and Bomb Squad here code three."
