Preface
I was 7 years old the first time my number was up. I was in the front yard playing when my ball rolled into the street and I ran out to grab it. Lucas told me he could see the numbers, after he pulled me out of the way of that truck. He said mine had hit 0, but once he saved me it went back up. At the time I didn't really understand him. My mom told me he was just playing, pretending. But then on my 11 birthday he pulled the brownies Mary Milton brought away from me. Turns out they had peanuts in them.
When I was 13 my dad got a new job and we had to move to California. Lucas told me I had 6 years on my clock. Exactly 6 years from April 5th 2010. He said he wanted me to know, to watch out when that day came, that he had always liked me and didn't want me to die. He kissed me before we left, that was my first kiss, minutes after he told me the day my number would be up. I didn't see him again after that. And I tried to forget his words.
When I graduated high school I told my parents I was taking the year off. I knew he had told me the day I would die, and I didn't want to spend my last few months in college for nothing. I traveled for a few months before I found myself back here, in tiny little Flint, Texas. I had to find him. Maybe he could save me again.
