So I arrived at the dock bought a ticket and went in the boat heading to Langford. It was smooth sailing but I'm always and will forever be seasick so I couldn't stop heaving up my insides. When we finally got to Langford I as quickly as possible got a carriage to bring me to Meadow Pond...once or twice I would notice individuals staring at my atrocious attire but desperate needs calls for desperate measures and if this wasn't desperation I didn't know what was...so shrugging off the scornful and pitiful looks I stepped up in the carriage by taking hold of the footman's hand.
We rode for what seemed like forever until I felt the carriage slowing until it halted all together. I tipped the gentlemen...crossed the road then stepped on the tiled surface which was lined with a freshly cut lawn on either side. The path seemed endless until I finally reached the enormous door that was made from the most modern kind of board I have ever seen. Which stood boldly beneath the limestone walls. I sighed searched for the bell and rung it. No sooner had I done so the door swung open. "Why hello dearest we've been awaiting your arri- my goodness are you ok?!" While he spoke my knees buckled and I fell in to his hard chest. "My lord!" He yelled for the Duke I guess and then everything went dark.I started coming around but when I tried opening my eyes my head throbbed so I kept them shut. Maybe I died and that would explain why I'm so comfortable... I'm in heaven, never have I felt so at peace but my soon throbbing head reminded me that if I died I would feel nothing so I didn't die,but how was it that everything felt so...WONDERFUL. The pain came again and I groaned.
"She's responding." A female voice said. She sounded tender and as if she really cared. I don't know who she said this to but immediately they rushed over. The bed eased slightly to my right and feminine hands were placed on my forehead. "Poor girl she looks so ill she appears as though food hasn't touched her lips in days" she was right I haven't eaten in quite a while, however she sounded so gracious, I guess she must be the Duchess...soft spoken and tender. "Meg send for Betsy tell her to bring some porridge for me to spoon feed Kaylee." She said and I couldn't believe she would take the trouble to do such a thing as this for me, plus she knows my name ...wow I wonder what did Chris tell these people about me... Oh well when I recover from my state of being I'll find out everything.
I heard new footsteps enter but briskly so I thought this must be Betsy.
The bed eased rather heavily to the bottom right and a raspy yet sweet male persona spoke "how is she doing Ann-Margaret?" Who is Ann-Margaret I thought but my question was soon answered when the Duchess answered in her calm and sympathetic voice. "She is coming on fine Edmund." She simply said ...now this was confusing who is this Edmund maybe he is the lord and ladyship's advisor.
"My lord!" Someone said in an alarmingly stern voice "we have business to attend to" ah so the Duke is here but where is he I haven't heard a word from him.
Hearing a chuckle from the same direction from which the bed now heavily sunk I heard Edmund say "hold your horses I'm coming Anthony, our guest is ill so I have to see how she is doing but I'm coming I'll be down in two minutes." Their guest...why do they have my best interest at heart ...noone does that anymore. "Keep me posted." ,he said and I heard a tender kiss being placed on the Duchess's cheek I guess.
He briskly walked out and in another hurry new steps came "ah Betsy there you are" the duchess said sounding relieved. "Here you go mi lady a warm bowl of soup" she said sounding pleased "I purposely brought soup since it's around supper but I'll make some lovely porridge for her in the morrow." She said before questions could be raised "OK Betsy thank you for your help you may resume your duties in the kitchen."
"Thank you mi lady and I do hope this young miss gets well soon to accept the good tidings that life has brought her way." Betsy responded as I heard her leave.
The duchess didn't comment she merely fed me after cooling every spoon of soup... When all was done she tucked me in and sat next to me until my breathing steadied and she knew I was nearing sleep, it was then that she whispered "yes dearest get well soon to see that life isn't as bad as it seems." At that I drifted into a sweet Haven.
