June 12th,1986The sun was beaming bright on the streets of Chicago. It was the summer time. Everybody was out on their front porches blasting the latest hip hop. Little kids dashed in front of the fire hydrant. The ice cream jingle played in the distance. Kids hightailed up the street to catch up.
I rode my black BMX bike down the street , popping the shells of my sunflower seeds with my brother Rome.
(Now y'all can't even lie ain't he adorable 😭)
"Bro you going down to the court with me later?"Rome asked as he bounced the basketball effortlessly doing tricks. My brother was always so good at playing I knew he was going to make it one day.
I shrugged my shoulders. "I told you they holding auditions down at the mall today , my teacher told me to try out so Imma go down there and see wassup." I said taking the flyer out my pocket.
He paused for a moment and I stopped my bike. He grabbed the flyer from me looking it over.
"It's after your curfew though."He said pointing at the time. It read 9pm. I huffed. I knew this would stir up a problem in the house. My drunk ass father always wanted an excuse to beat my ass or my mothers ass.
"But I could cover for you."Rome suggested as he looked over the disappointment on my face. My eyes light up. I dapped him up.
"Thanks Rome. I owe you."I said. He waved me off and starting walking down the street.
"So you really want to do this pretend shit for the rest of your life huh?"he asked dribbling the ball through his legs.
I shrugged as I peddled standing up. "Either that or music. It's not called pretend either fool. It's acting , it's fun we do it all the time in school. Plus you know how many girls you get just from being an actor."I said trying to attempt a bunny hop.
Rome chuckled. "What you know about the girls lil dude."He said slapping the front of my SnapBack. I looked across the street at a group of girls playing double Dutch. I saw their eyes peek over at me and my brother.
