"Steve, have you seen this moths rent? we'll never make it on time." i said from the table, i had the bill in my hand and the stack of mail sitting beside my elbow, waiting to be opened.
Steve came in and sat down beside me taking the paper out of my hand, scanning over it before setting it down.
"since when have we ever made a payment on time? why is it so high, we weren't here half of the damn month," he paused before a sudden realization washed over his face, "your cousin."
it made sense, she had house sat for us while we had gone to visit Steve's friends. but it isnt all her, we use the energy and water as much as she did.
"that would make sense, but we use this place just as much as she did, so the blame isn't all on her." i said truthfully. Steve must not have liked my response for he abruptly got out of his chair.
"are you kidding me right now Y/N? youre so...flabbergasting! you know that your cousin is at fault but you still choose to defend her, why?!" he said angrily, i flinched but stood my ground.
"well, Steve, i protect her because shes family and thats what family does... not that you'd know anything about that." i said and soon after the reality of my words sunk in like a knife.
he looked at me, pain filling his expression before saying, "and were not family?"
it was my turn to feel pain, my heart beat rapidly as the feeling of guilt consumed me whole. here i was cutting down the one who made me feel... alive if you can call it that.
"Steve i didn't mean it that way," i said softly
"then how did you mean it? that i don't have a family, or perhaps that i'm not family to you?" he said
"Steve i-" i couldn't get my words out for he was already out the door
"Steve wait!" i yelled and ran after him, i looked around but he was nowhere in sight. what have i done?
◐ ◑ ◐ ◑ ◐ ◑ ◐ ◑
it had been forty-five minutes of driving around and looking for Steve, but no such luck in any of his favorite places.
i pulled into a rest area and parked before leaning my head against the steering wheel.
'where could he have gone, it couldn't have been far, he is a man on legs after all.'
i got out and walked into he nearby woods, it had gotten pretty late, but if i knew he was okay, then thats all that mattered.
"Steve? Steve please come out if youre here!" i called out into the sea of dark pine and other coniferous trees.
i heard nothing but my own echo and decided to move forward.
after about 15 minutes,i sat down on a large rock and put my head into my hands, "ill never find him, its all my fault." a stray tear rolled down my cheek and then another and so fourth.
"y/n?" a familiar voice came from in front of me, i lifted my head up to see a distressed looking Steve.
"Steve?" i called out standing up
he laughed a bit before nodding
"yeah."
i ran up and hugged him as hard as possible earning a grunt from him.
"its okay, im fine." he said awkwardly patting my back.
"no youre not, im sorry for being so mean earlier. if it weren't for me we wouldn't be in this situation." i mumbled from his chest.
he let out a hearty laugh that shook his chest,"i should be the one apologizing, going after your cousin like that." he said
i looked up from our little hug and said," i dont care what i said back there, you are my family and i dont want to ever loose you, tonight was the most scared id have ever been in my life." I admitted
"youre my family too rather you realize it or not." he said bringing his face a little closer to mine, "youre the best family anyone could have."
he gave me a little kiss on the forehead before walking off.
"tease." i called out after him
"as if."
