Sam listened intently on the story that her mother was telling her at the dinner table.Sam had heard the story many, many times and yet, she still loved to hear it. It was the story of how her parents light had connected in the middle of the New York City streets. Her mother no longer worked at McDonalds, but her husband got her into collage to do whatever she wanted, and Sam's mother chose to become a doctor.
Sam's father was a business man. He owned a very successful search engine called 'Idea'. It wasn't as successful as Google, but even google started out small. She thinks...
Her little brother, Damon was making a disgusted face as the story continued into when their father kissed their mother under the sky full of stars you couldn't see.
He won't be making that face when he gets his light, Sam thought to herself.
It was a Sunday night, 2 days before Sam would receive her own light. 2 full days before Sam turned 17.
When she was being honest, she knew that deep down she was really scared. Getting your light was a very huge milestone in a persons life. Her parents were already inviting friends and family over, and planning a huge party for her.
Getting your light was kind of a big deal. Her friends were especially excited for her.
Amara and Jayden were her very best friends since grade school. They were both friends with each other before they were friends with Sam. When Sam had moved into the new town, Jayden had already liked her because of how 'honest and easy to talk to' Sam was. Jayden's words. Not hers.
Jayden had already received his light. He has been 17 for 8 months. His birthday being in January. He had not yet found his soul mate, and his light had not ever become darker. Not once. It was making Jayden a sort of depressed. He knew that he was still young, and that maybe his soul mate just hadn't gotten her own light yet.
Ironically, Sam and Amara's birthdays were on the same days. So, they would be having their celebration together.
Both Sam and Amara are super excited. Sam let her thoughts continue to wonder about what her soul mate would be like.
She was suddenly ripped from her imagination when her brother had pinched her in the arm.
"Ow!" Sam exclaimed. "Sorry, but you were daydreaming again. Mom was trying to talk to you," Damon said in an accusing manner.
"Oh, what mom?" Sam said, looking at her mother. "Well I was asking if you were excited for your birthday party with Amara?"
Sam's mother was almost more excited than Sam was. Her name was Rose Brooks. She was always caring towards her children and loved them with as much as she had. Rose got married to her husband, Mark Brooks. Mark was a passionate man. He cared about Rose more than anything in the world when they had got married. Later on they had their first daughter.
Sam Brooks, and then They had Damon Brooks.
Although Sam's entrance to the world was an easy one, Damon's was not. A little while before Damon was born, Rose had an ultrasound to make sure that everything was going as it should.
It was not.
Damon was in Roses stomach upside-down. His head was not in the right position to be born. They had to go inside and turn him around.
Everything was going fine until she went into labor. She umbilical cord got stuck around the baby's legs tying them together, and cutting off the blood circulation. They didn't get it untangled in time for the circulation to start again, and his legs became paralyzed.
Sam finally answered her mother after thinking about it for a moment. "I am very excited mom. I can't wait to see all of my friends there to celebrate Amara and I's birthday!"
It wasn't a lie, she was really truly excited. But more scared than anything. She was frightened that she would never find a soul mate. Then again, she was also frightened to have a soul mate right when she got her light. She wasn't ready! Even though her parents told her that right when you get your light, you get a large amount of maturity and responsibility.
"I am so glad, Sam. Your father and I are getting ready to set things up and make it the best day ever! Oh, and make sure that Amara knows that your not going to school on Teusday. I haven't told her yet, but I'm sure she already knows. "
"Alright mom. I will do that. Jayden will also not be going to school, right?"
"Right. We want all of your friends to be there on Friday!"
Sam pondered over her mothers words and continued eating. She only had Amara and Jayden as friends. She was quite a nerd. That's probably one of the reasons that she is able to skip school on Friday. She is very much ahead in her grades.
"Oh and Sam, could you help get Damon into bed tonight? Your father and I need to speak." Sam's mother gave her a pleading look and Sam caved. "Alright, but that means that I get an hour of Undisturbed reading afterwards."
Sam was an extreme bookworm. She loved to lose herself in books. Her favorite part about them was when she got so carried away that she forgets that she is actually just sitting on her bed. Not at a ball or running through the Savannah, or trying to escape the prison because she was framed.
Getting up from her seat, she picked up her brothers and her dishes and put them in the sink. She would have to clean them up later. Even though her parents earn a large amount of money, does not mean that they want people to do work for them. They think that it makes them useless.
Sam takes the handles of Damon's wheelchair and she wheels him through the hall into his room. He got the room on the main floor because it would be easier to transport him places.
When she gets him in his room, Sam asks Damon about his day at school and he goes on to tell her that he didn't do anything. His only friend was a girl and during recess she would wheel him over to a bench so that they could chat about different things.
"Well that sounds fun. What's her name?" Sam asks Damon and he looks down at his lap while Sam in strapped his legs. "Her name is Cassidy. She lets me call her Cass. She says that no one else gets to call her Cass. Only me!" He says pointing to himself with a proud smile on his face.
Sam continues to unbuckle Damon and hauls him into the bed with he helps her as much as he can with his arms.
"Tell me about Cass," Sam requests. Damon immediately blushes and looks up at Sam. "She is the second most beautiful girl that I have ever met." That piqued Sam's interest. "Oh, and who is the first girl, hm?"
"It's you Sammy!" Sam blushes. Even though it was her brother, she still loved the way he looked at her like she really was the most beautiful girl he ever met.
"Well Damon, I hope that you treat this girl nicely. She must be very special to you. Goodnight Damey," she whispered the last part to him and kissed his cheek and left the room after turning his light off.
Well darn, Sam thought to herself.
Now I have to do the dishes.
