I made my way to the kitchen back door hastily, glancing back every few seconds to make sure I was alone. I had been waiting all day for this moment. I had never before wished for a day to end so faster. I am sure even Sister Joanne noticed but she said nothing on the matter.
I slipped out making sure to pull the door shut slowly.
I grabbed my dress lifting it alittle as I took of towards the western wall where the primrose grew. Not at all interested in the stars or dark night. Not even the flower garden could deter me tonight.
I made no stop till I got to the wall and that was when I realised how dark it was. It was the period of the new moon. I looked around hoping to catch a glimpse of Charlie, suddenly feeling very conscious of the shadows around me.
I heard a slight rustling and I turned towards the noise just as he materialized from the shadows. A breathe I did not know I was holding slipped out and I approached him.
"You bastard!" I hissed.
"Lovely to see you too my lady." He replied smiling.
"You son of a bachelor!" I spat as I thumped my fists on his chest.
Heavens! It's solid!
"How could you?" I yelled, shaking the thoughts away. "How dare you?"
"How dare you show your face after all this years? How dare you show your face and pretend as though nothing has changed?" My voice filled with anger.
"Do you know how long I waited? It has been eight years you bastard! Eight years all alone. Surrounded by strangers for half my life. With nothing to remember you by except a promise that has taken you close to a decade to fulfill."
"How dare you pretend as though we are alright after you left me all those years ago. Left to fend for myself. No one who understood or had witnessed what I had gone through. No one to help me sleep at night and comfort me when I had a nightmare."
"Eight years Charlie! Eight! All alone. Waiting for you to come find me. To take me away from this place."
"We looked after each other. Kept each other warm. We helped ward of each others fears. We comforted each other. We looked after each other. Then you left and I never saw you again. I waited! Thinking 'this is the day.' He will surely come today.' And days turned to months and then to years. Nothing! Not even a letter! Nothing Charlie."
"Was I such a burden you could not wait to rid yourself of? A nuisance you just couldn't stand anymore? Did I mean so little to you? So much so you ran away to a get rid of me knowing I would wait for you?" My voice filled with pain and hurt.
"You bastard! Defend yourself! Tell me why!" I yelled as I thumped my fists on his chest harder.
"Why Charlie? Why?" I finally said as I succumbed to the hurt and tears welling up inside. "Just tell me why Charlie. Why?"
I slumped to the ground crying but a body clutched mine to itself. He slipped to the ground with me in his arms, now a sobbing mess.
"I'm sorry my love. Forgive me. I'm here now. You're alright." He said over and over as he rocked me.

We lay in silence under the dark night sky, his warm body beside me, my head laying on his chest.
Our hands were intertwined, his hand in my hair as I listened to his steady heartbeat, our breathes synched.
He was yet to answer my questions but I felt content to wait. I had gotten all I felt off my chest and that was good enough for now. We would sort through everything as we went along. All I wanted right now was to have him near me.
I felt him look at me as his thumb brushed away another stray tear.
"I'm sorry my love. I meant you no strain. I knew you would be angry with me once I told you so I chose to let you figure it out yourself. I am truly sorry." He said and he placed a kiss on my forehead.
"Just promise not to leave me again. And keep it this time." I said lifting myself up to look at his face.
"I promise my love. I never want lose you again." He said and I smiled. "Come. I want to show you something."
He quickly took to his feet and helped me up. He took my hand and led me to the orchid that was to the south.
I hesitated when we got to the entrance of the orchid and he stopped.
"Do you trust me my love?" He asked taking my face between his hands, his eyes boring into mine.
"Yes. I do." I replied shyly.
"Come. I mean you no harm." He said tugging my hand once more and into the orchid we went. It did not take long for me to hear it.
Music!
My excitement must have been evident cause Charlie turned towards me with a wide smile. We stopped and he turned towards me a serious look on his face.
"May I have this dance my lady?" He said with a bow and an outstretched hand.
"Of course my lord." I said with a curtsy, giggling slightly as I slipped my hand into his.
He pulled me to him and before I knew it, we were swaying to the music and laughing heartily. I heard a faint flapping sound as two birds, one white and another black flew past us.
It was not until the we were flat on our backs laughing at our exhaustion that I realised the darkness was fading. I scrambled to my feet and Charlie was right there with me.
"What is it my love? "
"It's almost daybreak!"
"Oh my! I hardly noticed." He said as he took my hand and we rushed out of the orchid.
He kissed my hand as he bade me farewell. I slipped into the House and into my room. It wasn't till I was tucked in bed, did I let out a relieved sigh and I drifted off to sleep.
