The car ride to the Silverstone household was quiet and tense. Nayla sat in the seat, arms crossed over each other and stared out the window. She would not speak to Alex, she was so pissed off, she wouldn't even know what to say if she wanted to. Alex on the other hand, was preoccupied with other matters on his mind. He felt no need to appease Nayla since he was convinced that what he was doing was for her own good.
After about a 5 kilometer drive from the town, Alex turned onto a dirt road and continued on that narrow road through densely packed trees on each side. Nayla was tempted to ask how long it would take to get to wherever the hell they were going, but her pride would not let her. It briefly crossed her mind that her pride might be the death of her one day. After 10 minutes of driving, it seemed that it was becoming easier to look through the trees as it became less dense. It wasn't until 10 more minutes passed that they came across the first houses. They drove pass about four big wooden houses, which were each a good distant from each other before they got to what Nayla assumed to be the Silverstone courtyard. Alex slowed down upon approach and came to a stop behind one of the three houses in the courtyard where, two trucks were already parked.
"Are you going to stay mad at me?" Alex asked as he switched off the engine of his car and turned to look at Nayla.
"What do you expect me to say?" Nayla replied. She refused to look at him even though she felt the intensity of his stare melting her resolve.
"I expect you to understand that as your mate one of my top priorities is to protect you. Even if you may not like my methods."
"Alex...I appreciate that you want to protect me, I do. However, I have had to protect myself for a long time, it is not easy for me to accept your protection just like that. I don't want to be your damsel in distress, especially, since I have given you nothing in return. Besides, I don't like you ordering me around, as if it's natural that I do as you say."
A brief silence befell them before Alex spoke again.
"I want to say I do not expect anything from you, but that would be a lie."
Nayla looked at him then but said nothing as he continued, his eyebrows knitting together in a frown as he did.
"However, I want you to know that protecting you is instinctual for me, it has nothing to do with whether or not you accept me or give me anything. It is also my instinct to take action and talk later. I expect my pack to follow what I say because I am the next alpha and some day their lives will depend on my orders."
"But I am not part of your pack" Nayla murmured as she looked away from him and down at her hands in her lap. The anger that Nayla had tried to hold onto had dissipated completely by now giving way to other strong emotions she wasn't ready to admit to yet.
"I know." he admitted, so she looked back at him.
He touched the back of his fingers to her cheek in a gentle caress.
"you are much more."
He immediately broke the skin contact that threatened to unleash strongly guarded desires as he felt them both slip into a daze.
"We should get going." He said, before he swiftly got out of the truck and went to the other side to open the door for Nayla.
"What is it?" Alex asked Nayla, who was still seated and deep in thought.
"Will I see your family today? I mean what will they think of me?" She asked, nervousness suddenly getting the best of her and with good measure. After all, she was entering the house of wolves.
"Don't worry, right now my top priority is protecting you, be it against the family or foe." Alex responded with a smirk.
"That does not make me feel any better about meeting your family." She murmured as she took his extended hand and got out of the truck.
"Don't worry, how bad can it be."
..........
'Ermm...really bad' Nayla thought, as they stood in front of the Alpha and his Luna in the Alpha's office. Nayla realized as she looked into the stern face of the Alpha where Alex must have inherited his stern look from. Alex's father looked more intimidating than Nayla could have ever imagined. A gruesome scar run from the left side of his forehead down to his chin barely missing one of his cold blue eyes. His features such as that of Alex were very sharp and handsome although a bit darker. The winkles around his eyes and the few strands of grey hairs in his otherwise blond hair bared his age. The Luna had a kinder face, she was very beautiful and build like a model, with long luscious brown hair cascading down her shoulders, high cheek bones and warm grey-blue eyes.
After the initial shock that Alex's mate is human, time in the room seemed to still, the Alpha was the one to speak first.
"She cannot stay here." Human's were not allowed to come in or stay in the Silverstone courtyard. It was one of their precautions against humans finding out about them. A general taboo, so to speak.
"Nayla is my mate. If she can't stay here, I will leave with her." Alex said calmly, but for all intents and purposes, he meant every word he uttered.
A flash of anger crossed the Alpha's face.
"You will do no such thing." He growled.
"If I may, my dear" The Luna intervened quickly as Alex's wolf growled at the Alpha. She knew it would come to a fight if she did not say anything. With a soft smile she touched the alpha's shoulder, relaxing him in the process.
"The Full moon is near so, we are all on edge. This is not the time to discuss this matter. I would suggest we discuss it when the full moon has passed. Till then at least, Nayla you are welcome to stay in our home." The Luna voiced.
Nayla quickly glanced at the reaction of the Alpha who was now leaned back in his chair. Except for his stern look, he remained stoic.
"Thank you very much Mrs Hunter." Nayla responded, feeling an urge to bow but restraining from doing so.
"Nayla could you please excuse us for a moment? " The Luna asked.
"Yes of course." Nayla replied, however, she could not leave because Alex did not loosen his grip on her hand.
"Alex, I will be right outside." She spoke softly to him, squeezing his hand in reassurance. He looked at her as if to see if she was okay and gave a small nod, granting her the chance to escape the Alpha' s cold eyes.
Nayla quickly left the Alpha office and closed the door behind her. She was about to turn a corner to find herself a seat away from the office when she almost bumped into someone. He was tall and had a certain likeness to Alex but like the Luna this guy had grey-blue eyes, although his hair had the similar dark blond shade that Alex had.
"I thought I smelled something delicious." The man said with a smug grin.
"Excuse me?" Nayla frowned at his comment.
"Don't mind me, I tend to say what I think. You must have come in with Alex. I am Dylan, Alex's handsome older brother. " He introduced himself extending a hand that Nayla tentatively took.
"Nayla."
"Enchanté, a beautiful name for a beautiful woman." He said placing a kiss on Nayla's Knuckles.
