Comment and vote about what you think so far!"Absolutely not Bailey."
I tilted my head back. "Dad! You're being like, super unreasonable right now."
My father took off his reading glasses and I sighed. Here comes the lecture... "You are a Sub, Bailey--and one who finds his way into trouble every damn day. You're insane if you think I'm going to let you wander Central City--"
"Wander? It's a freaking class trip."
"Don't," he poked his finger angrily at me. "Speak to me on that manner. And I'm saying no."
"But why? There will be a ton of teachers."
"And how many of those teachers are Subs, exactly? You're lily were even letting you go to Secondary so I suggest you get your attitude into check."
Whenever I got angry or upset I cried. I hated it but it often softened up my parents. Sure enough as the first year dripped down my cheek my father lost his posture and slouched a bit. "Don't do that Bailey."
"You don't let me go anywhere," I choked out, wiping away my tears with the sleeve of my sweatshirt. "I get that you're doing it to keep me safe or whatever but what is the point of being alive if you won't let me live?"
"You've got your whole life to live Bailey. How about your mother takes you shopping on that day so you don't feel so left out? You can even use daddy's credit card."
My stance wavered. My father wasn't a cheap man but he was cost effective. My shopping trips always had a budget. "Really?"
"Yup. Five hundred."
My eyes went wide. "Really?"
He smiled. "Of course. You can sleep in, have your mother make you a nice breakfast, then you two can go out and you can spend five hundred dollars where ever you want."
I bit my lip. "I really want to go to Central City Dad."
The smile disappear. He set down the glasses and rubbed his forehead. "You can't just have sub alone."
"I won't be alone! There will be teachers, other students--not everywhere is dangerous Dad."
"I'll think about it," he finally relented, taking the permission slip.
I squealed and ran around the desk to throw my arms around him. He sighed heavily. "That's not a yes Bailey so don't get too excited."
"I love you, I love you, I love you!"
My father tried to hide his smile. "Alright, alright. I have work I need to get done. Go get some homework done."
"Already done," I sang in reply.
My father shook his head a bit with a laugh. "I've never seen someone so happy to do schoolwork. Especially Henry."
I sighed. My older brother had fought my father every step of the way in his education and was no barely skimming by in college. He didn't realize how lucky he was to be not only allowed but expected to be educated! I'd kill to have the same opportunity but Henry was content just pissing it all away.
"Is he coming up for Grammy's party this weekend?"
Dad scoffed. "He's studying this weekend."
"So getting drunk and partying then?"
"Most likely."
"Ugh."
I stood up and watched his push the permission slip under a few folders with a tight frown. "Dad you'll forget."
"I will not forget Bailey. Stop pestering me so I can get my work done."
I stood up with a worries frown. I climbed the stairs up out of Dad's basement office. In the kitchen my mother was making lunches for tomorrow. She tucked a strand of honey blonde hair behind her ear and smiled. "How'd it go?"
"He'll think about," I replied pulling an apple from the bowl. I took a thoughtful bite. "Maybe you--"
"Don't even say it Bailey. I'm not bothering your father about this. It's his decision."
"I'm your son too," I argued.
She hummed in agreement. "And what a good boy you are--usually."
I narrowed my eyes. "I'm not being bad."
"No of course not. Just...difficult."
"Difficult?"
"You have a big dreams and a big ego. I just think you could be more...practical."
"More like Nollan Graves."
My mother visibly perked up. He was the son of a wealthy family in my parents social group. He was a star sub I guess and the Dom who selected him ran a multimillion dollar company that spanned three continents.
It wasn't that big of a deal.
"He's such a nice, respectful boy."
"Pfft. He's boring."
My mother set the jelly knife down gingerly. "There's nothing boring about being sensible Bailey. When you get your Dom you'll understand."
I snorted. "Well dad's a little late forming that contract--not that I care."
My mother just sighed. "Just calm down a bit alright? Your dad pulled a lot of strings and spent a lot of money to get you into Jameson. The least you can do is respect his decisions. Okay?"
"Yes mother."
She smiled. "You've probably finished all your homework, hm?"
"In study hall. It's so great in that library mom. So big and quiet with millions of books! And I'm so productive there!"
She smiled sadly. "If only your brother had the same enthusiasm."
My smile faltered and I scowled. "He's a jackass."
"That kind of language is not becoming of a sub Bailey--however true it may be. He's just...having a rough time adjusting. We need to support him."
"It's been almost two years."
"Bailey."
"Can I run to the bookstore mom? Dad locked himself in the office so I don't want to bug him."
My mother paused a moment. "Alright. I suppose he wouldn't mind. He's let you go alone before right?"
"Yeah," I lied. "All the time. How much can I have?"
My mother tutted. "Don't be so greedy Bailey. I have twenty five dollars in my wallet. That's all you've got to spend."
I beamed and took the bills. "Thanks mom!"
"Keep your phone on and be home by six!" She called as I ran out the door. "Be safe!"
"Yes mom. I love you."
"Six Bailey. And not a minute later!"
