The Dead Are Among Us

Chapter Five

My body is sore, my head is pounding, I can barely even open my eyes but... I'm alive.. Where am I though? All I remember was carrying... Daisy after that it went dark. Is Daisy okay? Is she dead? I struggle to open my eyes only to see a starry night sky. I look around and I see I'm still in the woods with a built fire in the middle. I had a blanket ontop of me but I was the only person there? How did I get here and when did I make this fire?

"See you're finally up" A voice that had caught my attention

That voice, I remember that voice.. It was Mike! My eyes wander trying to find him, he was behind me gathering wood. I stared at him and looked at my wounds, he had patched them up. How did he find me? I was far away from the store. My body is still weak so it took some time for me to sit up. The glass shard that was in my leg was removed with a huge bloody band aid wrapped on my leg. The only thing on my mind was where is Daisy? 

"How long have I been out?" I rasply say

"Just a day really" 

"Where is Daisy?!" I panicked 

"Who?"

I got up quickly but struggled onto my feet falling back down. Mike watched me stuggling in pain laughing at me. Trying to walk up to him, he pushes me back down making me fall back to where I was sleeping.

"Stop trying to hurt yourself, if your talking about the girl you were with she's in the tent" Mike announced

"Is she alright?"

"Is she your girlfriend or something" he jokingly said "Shes fine luckily.. Surprisingly actually, she took in a lot"

"Can I see her?" I asked

Mike pointed to the tent where she was at. I slowly got up walking to the tent, I was surprised myself that I could even stand. Once I reached the tent I opened the tent seeing her bruised body laying on a blanket. Daisy looked lifeless, could of sworn she was dead but I could see her breathing. She had a band aid wrapped around her head, arm, leg, and I could see another band ain of her stomach since her shirt was a little lifted up. Once I saw she was okay I went back to where Mike was laying on where I slept.

"Mike how did you find us?"

"Well wherever you guys were planning to go you were heading back to the store so you weren't that far"

I was confused because I could of sworn we were going the opposite way. I stared at Mike skinning a squirrel live for supper. He didn't care what animal it was or how loud the squekle was if he found oppurtunity for food he would take it. He had captured 4 squirrels which would last us for the night. My eyes started to scan where we were, we weren't safe at all we were in the wide open. Knowing that me and Daisy were in bad condition it was risky for us to survive on our own out here. I gazed at the stars looking how they were the only beautiful things to see at a time like this. Mike was sharpening his weapons, he had a lot of knives and two swords.

"Mike how did you really find us.. Like I know we weren't far away but don't you stay at the store?"

He stared at me as if I asked the most dumbest question in the entire world.

"I don't stay at that store? I just stayed their for 3 days till I could get back on my feet, if I stayed their I wouldn't have a chance for living"

"Then how long are we staying here?"

"We? What do you mean we? He laughed "Their is no we John, I'm leaving tomorrow you and that girl are on your own. I'll give you guys some more supplies before I head off"

My worriness kicked in, how could he just leave us out here? I would never do that to him or any survivor. Mike was selfish all he cared for was himself, no one else but himself. I had fury in my eyes, I stared at the fire seeming I was staring at my emotions in a reflection. 

"How can you be so selfish?" I snapped

"Selfish? What do you mean selfish? I patched you guys up, I brought you guys here, I gave you some shelter and food and you have to say I'm selfish? I could of left yall asses back there for all I care!" He yelled

"Why do you always want to be alone though? At least you could help us out? We would return the favor!"

"Well too damn bad the world is shit and so am I everyone is on their own" 

"What about the girl!... The girl she's only 13!"

Mike took a long pause, he knew what he was doing was wrong and unjust. He stared at the fire for a period of time. I really don't know why he wanted to be a loner so much. He finally looked me in the eyes with anger but also with sorrow.

"I'm leaving in the morning" He finally announced

Grabbing his blanket he laid down going to sleep while his back was facing me. My eyes were watering but my fists were clenched. My body would still restrain me from making any quick movements so all I could do was just lay done thinking of hurting him. I cared for Daisy she was a minor, more like a little sister to me, I never really had a sister. If anything happened to her I felt that I was to blame, I already blame myself going to the party instead of being with my family. Before I went to sleep I wanted to check up on Daisy. I forced myself over to the tent where she was laying. Once I opened the tent, she was still laying their making no sudden movements. In all honesty she really looked dead, I felt that she really is and we are just keeping her body. Before I was about to leave the tent I heard a soft voice within my ears.

"John?" Daisy spoke softly

"Hey there you alright?" I replied while sitting beside her

"I can't move.. Why can't I move?"

"Maybe it's because your still in pain from the..." I paused, what if she didn't remember? "Do you remember what happened?"

She looked confused and frightened she must of thought maybe I did this to her on purpose.

"Remember what?" 

"The crash..When the car flipped, you were knocked out" 

She still had the same look on her face, I guess she really didn't remember. It was reasonable because a crash like that could even had killed us. Daisy looked paralyzed lying on the floor, while her bright eyes still glued on me. Their was an awkward silence, none of us decided to speak. I felt that their was nothing else to say. 

"John, how did I get here?"

"Well after the crash a friend helped us on our feet"

"Are we going to be staying with them?"

How am I supposed to break it to her after this we will be on our own. I felt bad knowing we are both in horrible conditions that we have to survive for ourselves but no matter what I'll try my best to keep us both alive.

"I hope.."

Daisy had a stern look,she seemed that she heard enough. She closed her eyes drifting back off to sleep.I went back outside going to where I had been sleeping. Their was no need to even try to see if Mike will change his mind once he put his mind on something that was it. No matter what I do I still find a way to screw up..
