I ran for I have no idea how long, never looking back, hardly paying attention to what was in front of me. All I could think about was all those people with lives that just ended because of the people I'd started to think of as family. I passed buildings and many humans, no one noticed me. I was too fast. I finally came to an abrupt halt in the woods, no idea where I was. What country I was in.
Who was my real family? Did I even have one? Then I thought of the question that should have come to my mind immediately when I first woke up in that horrible room in Volterra. Why was I there?
I crumpled against a tree and buried my face in my arms, unable to cry, unable to stop crying on the inside. I don't know how long I stayed in that position, but eventually I heard a twig break and my head snapped up. I saw a human boy around my age standing about 10 feet away from me staring. I stood slowly and stared back.
"Hi." He said awkwardly after about a minute of this.
"Uh, hi." I leaned against the tree, trying to make myself seem more human, and focused on breathing and blinking.
"Are you okay?" A small crease appeared between his eyes. He was concerned. How cute.
"Completely fine." I lied, smiling.
He stared for a few seconds. I suddenly realized what he was seeing. Random inhumanly beautiful teenage girl with bright red eyes crying by a tree alone in the middle of a forest.
"I was just taking a walk and I got lost." I explained. He opened his mouth and I added quickly, "But I'm sure I can find my way back, I don't live far. Why are you out here?"
He raised his eyebrows at my story, then looked guarded when I questioned him. "Oh, same reason, vampire girl." He smirked at my shocked expression.
"W-what do you mean? Vampires?" I snorted. "Why would you think I was one of those?"
"Chill." He laughed, then suddenly began to change. His image blurred for a quarter of a second, and I gasped. He had the same short blond hair and pale skin, but his eyes were golden and he was much more handsome. He was a vampire, too.
"How did you do that? And why did you pretend to be human?" I demanded. "You almost gave me a heart attack, you know."
He chuckled. "You should have seen your face." I glared and he smiled apologetically. "My gift is shape shifting, I can change into anything I want. And I pretended because I was curious about whether or not you would attack me, being a newborn and all. Based on the fact that you didn't, I'm guessing you're one of those vampires that drink animal blood."
My mind was racing. Vampires that drink animal blood? Could I do that? "Vampires can drink...animal blood?" I didn't have to be a monster. I could drink from animals. Humans can live. No fishing for me.
"Yes, I believe there's a family around here that does that...I was actually looking for them when I stumbled across you." He had a highly amused look in his eyes. "Would you like to tag along, vampire girl?"
"My name is Clarisse," I snapped, "and no, thank you, I can find them on my own."
He only became more amused. "Suit yourself, Clarisse. You won't get far, however, with all the werewolves prowling around. Well, best be off. Goodbye, now."
He changed back into a human and continued walking in the direction he'd been heading.
My body was frozen in place. No one said anything about there being werewolves. How messed up could one world get?
I turned, ready to beg for him to take me with him, but he was already gone.
