◆ Earth [March 4th, 2571]

Cyane gazed at the half destroyed outside world. She'd made it through every guard, passed every camera unseen. Her hand reached for her certificates, easing her stress. She might just have a normal life again. She was free.

A small smile carved her lips upwards as the realisation that she could do what she pleased with her life slowly sank in the deepest parts of her soul. After 8 years of being homeschooled in the most guarded and well equipped school in the known world, seeing the burned trees and the down turned cars was hell of a sight. She gulped and continued running away from her prison.

Moving from car to car, she searched for a way to move away from this inferno. She gathered everything she could; maps, water, a knife. She had to go to Michigan, find her home, maybe even stay there. While sinking in her thoughts, her eyes scanned the horizon for a less damaged car. Finding one, she bolted to a run and rushed to check it up.

The hydrogen battery was almost full, the tires were half destroyed and there were no keys, but she thought it would do. She recalled an engineering lesson she had a year ago and started cutting some wires, wrapping them into one and starting the engine. Satisfied by her work, she reached for the steering wheel, fastened her seatbelt and set off the road.

Her smile faded as minutes later she felt she was being watched. Her mind started screaming in fear but she forced it to stop, concentrating on her plan. Judging by some destroyed signs, she found out that she was inside the Michigan state, and luckily to her, two hours away from Grand Rapids, her home city. She sighed in relief and accelerated, the need to feel safe building up inside her.

An hour and a half later, Cyane could see the skyscrapers of Grand Rapids as clear as day. She almost floored the accelerator, nervous tension making her heart clench as for now the gut feeling she had few hours ago had turned into pure insecurity; the insecurity that would make a toddler curl up in a ball and cry at night. She would often turn her head right and left, look at the sky or glance at the back of the car for anything or anyone that could stalk her. Shifting uneasily on her seat, she took a turn to the city she cherished and sighed, hoping that she would visit her father again. The low hum of the car's engine slowly lulled her to peace, making her bright pink lips curve upwards.

Suddenly, an explosion forced the car to spin and roll, hitting the asphalt harder and harder with each turn. Cyane's heart skipped a beat. She gasped in terror, her body taking the place of a punching bag for every broken piece of the car hanging loose and flying all over. Her bloodied hands reached for her head, trying to protect it from further damage, and she whimpered as the car soon came to a stop. She forced herself to exit the car and glanced around her, looking for the person or any other thing that fired at her. For a moment, she gazed at the skyscrapers of Grand Rapids and frowned.

She heard footsteps from behind her, the determined footsteps of a well trained soldier. 'Shit', she thought and turned, facing a two and a half meters tall Spartan. Even before having the time to think of anything other than notice the UNSC logo on his chest plate, Cyane felt his fist landing on her head; the pure agony of metal crashing on bone before nothingness.
