Savannah's POV

I was speechless.

I wanted to say yes but something in my brain wasn't clicking.

I looked at Colby.

My heart broke just looking at him.

He was staring at me, eyes wide with shock.

I can't say yes.

"Colby... I..." I whimpered. He shook his head and looked at the ground. His hands were pulling at his hair. "I'm so sorry... I didn't mean to put you in this position." He whispered with a shaky voice. He looked up at me, his face was red. He turned away and walked to his car. He got in the drivers seat and turned the key. He waited for Sam. Sam opened the door, but stood there for a second staring at Colby. Then he went to sit in the car hesitantly. He sat down without a problem and closed the door. Colby pulled out of the parking lot and left down the street.

What have I done?

I ruined his day.

Maybe his life.

Colby's POV

I can not believe that just happened!

She... she totally hates me now.

No doubt.

"Do you want to tell me something?" Sam spoke out of the blue. "What? Oh no... nothing." I forced a smile. Sam raised an eyebrow at me. "Okay fine. You got me. I asked Savannah to be my girlfriend... and before you get too excited... she said no..." I whispered staring at the road. "Oh... dude I'm so sorry..." I shook my head. "There's nothing to be sorry about. I ruined everything between us." I continued to drive... the car was silent.

We got to the apartment and I just threw the keys on the counter and went to my room. I laid in my bed staring at the ceiling. Contemplating on what I should do. I decided to keep her as a friend for now. Without meaning to I fell asleep.

"Colby!" I heard someone yell my name. I groaned angrily. My door slammed open and Sam ran in. "Colby!!" He yelled again. He grabbed my shoulders and shook me. "What! What?! What do you want?!" I yelled back pulling myself away from him. "Guess who is here right now!!" He jumped giddily. "Who?" I asked smiling. "No one." He said, his face going blank. "We just got our new camera set up." He shrugged it off. I furrowed my brow and stood up. I walked into the living room and seen a huge box on the couch. I sighed. Sam was always doing this to me. I went back in my room as Sam passed me. I got dressed in my favorite shorts. I threw on a Nirvana shirt and a SnapBack hat. I grabbed my blue sunglasses and a backpack. I packed myself a lunch and three water bottles. "See ya Sam! I'm gonna go hiking!" I announced grabbing my keys.

Ahhh! The fresh air!

Now I can be alone!

I love being able to come out here whenever I'm feeling confused or lost!

Being on the hilltops makes me feel powerful!

I looked out at the city as the sun shone high above me. I sighed happily and decided to take a break. I sat down and pulled out a water. I took a big drink then set the water beside me. I listened to the birds chirping and the bugs buzzing or making whatever noise they can.
"Help!" I heard a soft voice. "Help!" It was coming from just below me. I looked down toward a patch of trees. Almost in the middle of the trees I could see the slightest hint of blue and red. "Help!" They called again. I quickly grabbed my water threw it in my bag and put it back on. I decided to go down the quickest way possible. Down the slope. I turned my feet and body sideways so that my right foot would catch my weight. I slid down as I held on to whatever was closest to me. I slid down and down until I hit flat ground. "Help!" The voice was louder now. I ran through the trees until I spotted a little girl. She was about 100 feet away from me. She was up in the tree... hanging from her backpack. She kept reaching at her back strap to try and free herself. I ran to her and tried to calm her down. "It's okay! It's okay! I'm here!" I yelled reassuringly. I threw my backpack down and started to climb the tree. The girl looked at me with tears still streaming down her face. I finally reached her. She threw her arms around my neck as I pulled her backpack strap off the branch. I carried her down the tree. When I reached the bottom the girl clung to my neck still. "It's okay! We are safely on the ground now." I tried to pull her off me but she tightened her grip. "Don't let go of me." She whimpered. I sighed and hugged her back. "What's your name?" I asked gently. "Elizabeth." She whispered. "Is it okay if I call you EB?" I asked. I felt her move her head. "I guess." She whimpered. Finally she allowed me to put her down. When her feet touched the ground, she sat down. She had curly brown hair and tan skin. Her eyes were brown. The tears on her freckled face dried up. She looked at me in awe. Like I was some kind of superhero. "How old are you EB?" I asked sitting down in front of her. "I'm five." She said holding up 5 fingers. "Are your parents around?" She shook her head and tears started to form again. "They are the ones who left me in the tree. They... put me on that branch! And ran!" She said in between sobs. I pulled her into my lap and rocked her back and forth. "EB? Is it alright if I take you to the police? They can help you." She looked up at me and shook her head violently saying no. "Why not?" I asked concerned. "They'll put me back with my mom and dad! I don't want to go back!" She cried. "Okay! Okay! Shhhh... it'll be okay!" I rocked her again as she quieted down.

I buckled EB in the back of my car and drove her to my apartment. I carried her up the stairs to our room. She had fallen asleep in the car. I opened the door. Sam walked over to me but stopped short. He pointed to the girl. "What the heck! You go out for a hike and come back with a kid!" He whisper-yelled. I nodded my head. I quietly put EB in my bed and closed the door. "She didn't want to go to the police station. So I brought her here. I'm gonna call the cops and ask them if they can come here." I explained to Sam. He nodded his head and looked at the door to my room. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialed 911. "911 what is you emergency?" A lady asked. "Uh... yeah hi! Um... I was on a hike not too long ago and I found a little girl hanging from a tree. I got her down safely but she refused to go with me to the station. Is it possible for you to send an officer to my apartment?" I asked, biting my lip nervously. There was a long silence then the lady spoke up. "We can send an officer to your place to ask question. What is your address?" She stated. I sighed with relief. I told her my address and she said they would send one right away.

There was a knock at the door. I got up from the couch and answered it. A police officer introduced himself and I allowed him in. "Where is the girl?" The man asked. "She's in my room sleeping." I told him. We talked for almost an hour about what happened and what information I got. The cop got up after he was done asking questions. "Can you watch the child for a while? We have to investigate this situation." He asked. I nodded my head and that was that. The officer left and I was stuck babysitting.

That poor girl!

How could someone just leave her like that?!

If I could... I would adopt her.

No child should be treated that way.

I'm so glad I was there to help her.

If I wasn't.

She could've died.
