Penelope Marie Burr

I sat up slowly as I began to awake fully. Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I finally began to come to my senses. My phone vibrated on my bedside table beside me, signaling that my alarm was going off, reminding me that I had to be ready in 40 minutes.

The room was dark around me, the only light coming from underneath my door. I could hear shuffling coming from outside my door, then a knock.

"Come in," I said, voice croaking from sleep. Tanya walked in, wearing a dressing gown and a towel on her head.

"Sorry if I woke you, I was just checking that you were awake. We have to be at the café soon so you should start getting ready," She smiled at me before excusing herself and closing my door. I groaned before pulling myself out of my warm bed into the cool of the air.

The floor felt cold underneath my feet as I trudged towards my drawers. I had unpacked all my clothes into a spare set of drawers almost as soon as I was free on the first day because I was going to be staying for over a month.

I picked out a light pink romper and a dark gray cardigan to go over the top.

Tanya was already applying makeup in front of her mirror when I walked into her room. I sat myself down next to her, applying my minimal makeup as she finished hers.

"Who's coming today?" I asked as I applied the final touches to my makeup.

"Jim, me, you, Zoe, Alfie and Joe. C'mon, I told you this," I chuckled, shaking my head.

"Yes, that's right, sor-" I was interrupted by a knocking on the door.

"Sorry to interrupt this ladies talk, but we have to go. We're supposed to be there in 5 minutes," I nodded to Jim, standing up from the seat next to Tanya. I follow Jim out of the room, Tanya travelling behind me. The three of us made our way out to Tanya's car and the air around me was cold. I shivered slightly, pulling my cardigan in tighter against my slim torso.

We were the last to arrive at the café, the others seated at a table towards the back. I slid into an empty seat, with Joe to my left.

"Hey," He whispered, smiling at me.

"Hey Joe," I returned the smile before meeting eyes with Tanya. She glared shortly at Joe before clearing her throat.

"So, guys, the wedding is a month away and all we have planned are the guests and the venue. I have my dress sorted too, but that's about it... the reason I called you all here is to discuss what needs to be done and who's going to do it," She leant down, pulling a diary out of her purse. She went through the group, telling us all the things we were in charge of. Zoë was in charge of finding the perfect bridesmaid dresses and the decorations. Alfie was in charge of catering, finding the food for all the guests. Jim was in charge of the music. Joe was in charge of finding the suits for the guys. And finally, I was in charge of making and sending invitations to all the guests. Tanya didn't really have a specific job, just making sure everything was running smoothly.

The waitress came as Tanya was explaining everything, and soon enough the six of us were sitting there with food in front of us, eating in silence.

Zoë and Alfie made conversation together, once they'd finished eating, as well as Tanya and Jim, so I'm forced to talk with Joe.

If Tanya's trying to keep Joe and I apart then she isn't doing a very good job.

I scooched in closer to Joe as he began talking.

"Hi," Joe looked particularly good today, under the dim lighting in the café. The way his tight top hugged him in the right places. "You know, Penelope, if you're going to stare, at least take a picture," His smirk grew as he noticed my gaze. My cheeks heated up and I was thankful for the dark café.

"I think you need to deflate your head, Joseph, I was not staring at you," I look up, meeting his intense stare. We sit like this for a minute or more, blinking very little, as if it were an unspoken staring contest. This was until my phone vibrated in my lap. I finally pulled my green eyes away from his blue ones. He chuckled to himself, joining in with Zoë and Alfie's conversation.

Tanya: Can I speak to you in the bathroom, please?

I looked up at her and she didn't look very happy. Sheepishly, I stood up. I was embarrassed as I followed her to the bathroom, although what for, I couldn't tell you.

"You've known Joe for three days and you're already flirting with him?" She attacked me with this assumption almost as soon as I walked through the bathroom door.

"Flirting? We were just talking! It didn't help that you were talking to Jim and Zoë was talking to Alfie, so I was stuck with Joe."

"Talking," She scoffed. "You might have thought you we just talking but I know you, Penelope, and I know that deep down you find him somewhat attractive, and that part of you was flirting with him."

"Yeah, sure, he's good looking and nice, but I wasn't flirting and I'm not attracted to him in that way."

"Then you won't mind me saying this then."

"Saying what?"

"I want you to stay away from him. He's too old for you and I don't want you getting hurt."

"You can't do that, Tanya!"

"I can, you're staying with me. I'm not going to stop you from seeing him, you can still hang out with him if there's a group of us, I just don't want the two of you hanging out on your own."

"I guess that's okay... Anyway, I'm only here for a month, what's the point in making friends with him if I'm never going to see him again?" I snickered, and Tanya gave me a skeptical look.

"I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not so I'm just going to agree..." She said, pulling me into a hug before walking back to where the group was waiting for us. I stood in between Zoë and Tanya, purposely trying to avoid standing by Joe.

I don't want to disappoint Tanya, she's my home for the next month.
