At the small figures playing some
Game below. Two children.
A girl and a boy. The girl was only
Around age eight with long red hair
And blue eyes that sparkled. A lot
Like me.
The boy was tall and lanky. At least
Age twelve. His dark brown hair went
Nicely with his pale skin and green
Eyes. He reminded me of Rose.
"Are you okay, Layla?" A voice said
From behind me.
"Yeah, I'm fine." I told, turning to face Rose.
Her sparkling red hair was up in a tight
Bun out of her face, revealing her
Sparkling gold irises.
"Don't lie to me, Layla." Rose said, wiggling
Her eyebrows.
I couldn't help but offer a smile
And take her hand. I took a seat on my bed
And Rose sat next to me.
Her gown barely grazed the wooden floors
Of my all white bedroom, while my
Own gown was all over the floor.
It was very well known which of us was
More womanly and which was destined to be
A man.
Rose took my hand out of my lap and
Into her own.
"What's wrong, Layla? And don't you dare tell me nothing because we both know you
Cannot lie to me."
Looking into Rose's golden eyes, I told her.
"I have a terrible feeling about this new
Area, Rose. I feel as if I'm going to get in a lot
Of trouble here. Have you seen the children
Play? They act scared. Their fear scares me.
Were destined to have children in the place
Where we turn eighteen. That's two months away. A week after our birthday we have to get married. To someone here. Have you seen the
Men?"
Rose stared at me, kindly. "It'll be okay, Layla."
I shook my head, but aloud her to continue.
"I've already met three nice fellows whom I am quite sure you will fall for on just looks alone.
Their personalities are even better."
My twin was beautiful. She took after mother.
A kind heart and pure beauty.
Something that I'll never receive.
"I'll take your word for it." I told her, standing and going to my bedroom window.
Looking down, I noticed the kids.
Being pulled.
In opposite directions.
By the demons were supposed to call our
Protectors.
I put a hand over my mouth.
"What is the matter?" Rose said quickly, coming to stand by my side at the window.
She looked at the children as well.
Horror raced across her face.
"Father!" She yelled, gracefully running out
Of my room and to fathers quarters while I stood there.
This would be the area in which I would marry and raise my children.
They would grow up with that.
The protectors fought to pull the kids as they
Reached out toward each other.
A frantic mother and father came out of a house down the street, one running to each child, trying to fight off the protectors.
The one with the boy pulled out a gun and aimed it at the mothers head.
He pulled the trigger.
I couldn't look away.
I felt the tears coming down my cheeks.
The father fought harder, punching the protector square in the jaw.
Seeing this action, the other protector dropped the boy and aimed his gun at the man, also pulling the trigger.
Watching down the road, I saw the boy get up and run.
Leaving his dead parents and younger sister on the road.
The protector shrugged his shoulders and aimed the gun at the little girl.
He pulled the trigger.
It was wrong what I was thinking but I didn't care because secretly, I was voting for the family who had just been slaughtered.
