Chapter Eleven

We Drive (and drive some more)

“Did you go to the bathroom?”

“Mum!”

“Well did you? And do you have enough snacks?”

“None of your business – and yeah we have enough. Geez.”

“What about water?”

“Yes.”

“Do you want a portable toilet, we have one in the back shed and-”

“Mother, we have everything. I’ll see you in ten days.”

Giving her mother a fleeting kiss and hug, Noel bounded down the steps and cut across the lawn, were Gabriel was waiting. Leaning against his car (which still had a very large dent from their attack with the udder monster) he looked annoyingly handsome, eyes twinkling at her, pale complexion blending with the winter wonderland surrounding him.

He grinned at her and offered up a napkin full of toast triangles “Morning Miss Seer! Toast?”

Sending him a glare, Noel accepted the toast and threw her rucksack in the back “Thanks. Why are we doing this by the way?”

“Because I want to take you home to meet my second family.” He said, opening the door for her.

“I thought we were meeting your friends.” Piling into the car, she reached for the heater.

“We are; they’re my second family. Stephen is especially looking forward to meeting you, Constantine is merely curious as to how I’ve made friends in the first place.” He chuckled as they rolled out of the driveway, waving to Mr and Mrs Foster, who were joined by Bernie and Mark.

Kicking off her shoes, Noel watched as Aytonville passed in a blur of sleepy townies and snow. “What about Lana, or Lilac?”

“Lola.” Corrected Gabriel “She…well, I haven’t really told her you’re coming yet.”

Eyes widening, Noel felt a flicker of fear “Oh my stars – you used to date, didn’t you?”

Wincing, Gabriel shrugged “Well, not really. She used to like me, I kind of…didn’t. She’s over it though.”

“Is she? Because I don’t want to be killed by a psycho ex when there’s nothing to be killed over.”

“But Angel, of course there's something to be killed over! I thought we were doing so well.” He winked at her as they turned onto the highway “Seriously though, don’t worry about Lola, you’ll like her. And we didn’t date, remember?”
