ms. kim, why am i thinking about you?
Winter felt like hell; heck, hell might be better.
White snow overcame the mountain tops and coated the ground in a thick sheet of white. It was a cold wonderland. People were dressed in thick clothing; soon they would be rolling down the streets as balls. Snowflakes fell onto small piles but were smashed as soon as people passed by. Hwayeonah looked up at the stars, a grin was on her lips as she counted the stars with her mind. Her trench coat for the colder weather was too big for her that the sleeves were longer than her short arms. The coat reached all the way down to her ankles. Thoughts came to mind as Hwayeonah looked up at the stars, what were the stars shaped in that way.
Hwayeonah felt an arm going around her small shoulders, she turned to look who sat down beside her with big eyes. Her brother smiled at her when she looked up at him with her dark eyes. Seongsook looked at the dark sky, too. "Why does the sky has a spoon in it?" Hwayeonah asked her brother as she returns her gaze back at the night sky. Her neck started to ache after watching the sky for a long time. Seongsook wanted to compare her eyes to the sky.
Seongsook pointed at the seven stars in the sky, "Those?" He got a hum in reply. He chuckled, "The Big Dipper."
Hwayeonah looked up at her brother. "A Constellation?"
"Something like that," Seongsook started. "You see that one right there? It is the Greek hero, Hercules."
Hwayeonah muttered something under her breath and stood up. "What is Mother and Father doing inside there?" She stood in front of her brother with her arms crossed. Her brother looked up at her and smiled with his teeth's showing. He also stood up and held Hwayeonah's small hand in his large one. "Finally, we will move out of our grandmother's house. Would you like that?"
Hwayeonah nodded too quickly to her brother's words like he asked if she wanted trillions of dollars. Something that she would not get. "Where would we now live?" She asked him as they walked away from the loud noise from the house. She could hear her father yelling at his mother with Hwayeonah's and Seongsook's mother in defence. They walked a long way down the empty road in hand, she looked confused at her brother as they continued down the road.
Seongsook exhales his warm breath into the cold air, the white smeared with the chilly air. "Far far away." He stopped a few steps away from the bus stop, and with that; police sirens ripped into the air like fireworks before independence days. A great surprise that cause screams in the street for help.
"Seongsook," Hwayeonah mumbles when the police's car rolled around the curb and up the street where she used to live on. She turned around to see what was happening behind her, she could see the police cars park right in front of her old house. "Why is the police outside Grandmother's house?"
"A vowel can't be next to a vowel, consonants are the only ones that can be set beside a vowel, but vowels can be next to each other. If only the word can make sense; they can be together." Seongsook didn't face his little sister. The police broke the front of their house, and took out their guns, pointing it out at the three people in the house. The lights went out as soon as their Grandmother started to yell insults at them. The harsh words cause one of the policeman to shot at the wall, the bullet sank into the wall, making a hole in it. Hwayeonah screamed as her father was harshly pushed against the police car, his face was pressed hard against the window as the policeman handcuffed him.
"Mother!" Hwayeonah screamed as her Mother was pushed onto the floor as she tried to get her husband out of the policeman's reach. She was thrown onto the floor. Seongsook took Hwayeonah in his arms and covered her face against his shoulder and started to run towards his Mother, he reached for her and pulled her up as their's hands touched.
