Ruby has always wanted a dog, but every time she asked her parents they always say "We don't think you are old enough yet, we will give you one when we feel you are ready." Every time they say this, she goes for a walk around the block, but after the fifteenth time she decided to walk further, trying to prove she is old enough to walk further than she is allowed.
She has never been in that part of Bimbleton before, so to her it was an adventure. While she was walking around, she came across an old lady selling dogs, so of course Ruby walks right up to her.
"Hello sweet child, would you like a free pug to brighten up your days? the old lady asked while holding out a black pug. "OH YES PLEASE!! THANK YOU!!" she takes the out from the old lady and gave it a big hug. The old lady handed Ruby a blue collar and said he was a boy. She decided to name him Bailey.
When Ruby was halfway home, she wondered what she was going to do with Bailey. After a while, she decided to hide him in her cupboard.
When she arrived home, she sneaked up the stairs and into her room, they spent an hour together until...
"Ruby!! Come downstairs for dinner!!"
This made her realize that she had no dog food. She would have to sneak some food from dinner.
When Ruby's parents finished their roast lamb, they left the table to do some work. Ruby took a long time eating on purpose so when her parents left, she could sneak some potatoes and lamb upstairs to give it to Bailey.
Ruby was so excited she got away with having a dog in the house, she started dancing around until she had no energy anymore, fell on her bed and slept.
9 months later it was Ruby's ninth birthday, which was spent with her five best friends and her parents. They sang songs, they danced, the played "pass the parcel", and danced around some more, until the cake came out. It was Ruby's favorite, triple chocolate ripple came with cream and Freddy frogs. Everyone ate the cake with one piece remaining, Ruby planned to give it to Bailey after everyone left.
When everyone left, Ruby sneaked up the stairs, opened up her cupboard and gave Bailey the remaining piece of the cake; he was hungry. But Ruby didn't know you aren't supposed to give dogs chocolate.
Ruby ran downstairs to get a glass of apple juice, after she had finished she ran upstairs to find Bailey lying dead in the carpet. She cried her eyes out, and when there were no tears left, she grabbed a sheet and covered Bailey in it and walked downstairs and into the backyard. She dug a hole in the veggie garden, put him in the hole and covered it up with dirt.
She lay down on the grass and looked up at the stars, trying to work out which one was Bailey when her parents ran into the backyard.
"Do you want your birthday present now?" her parents asked with the answer of "YES". Her parents pulled out from behind their backs. It was a dog.
