"I know how you would never let me buy you flowers, because you thought they were a waste of time and money. I didn't think so. But, I did as you said. Now I'm buying you flowers for the first time, and I know what you would say to me. But you know what I have to say to that?
"Flowers aren't a waste of money. And these I'm giving to you right now, they're money well spent. The best purchase for you I've made, because it's the last.
"When you saw a flower, you would see the petals wilting in a few days, imagining where the money could have gone. When I see these flowers, I see your smiling face, and how much the money and remaining life in them doesn't even matter. I see the beauty in them, the beauty that has an expiration date.
"You will forever be my beautiful flower, even if your expiration date came far too soon." He laid the red roses onto the grass in front of her headstone, smiling as a single tear fell from his left eye. He didn't wipe it away; he allowed the tear to slide down his cheek. "I love you, Maria." With those last four words, he turned and walked away, not looking back.
Where did he go? He moved to Hawaii, where they had both promised to live after retirement. He knew she would have wanted him to go there, so he did.
Every day until he too joined the ground in which she rested, he would toss rose petals into the ocean, reminiscing the many memories they'd shared.
