When Hinata hadn't turned up to the practice match and wasn't answering his phone, Kageyama had began worrying, where was he? Why would he miss something like this? Sure it wasn't an entirely important match but every match was is important as official matches to Hinata, he wouldn't usually miss anything unless it was necessary.
They played without him, as they had to, and they lost, Kageyama was too worried about the orange haired boy to care. But he had no idea where he lived, and he wasn't answering his phone, what was he supposed to do?
***
A week passed and Hinata finally returned to school. He was looking a little paler than usual and he looked like he'd lost weight, but he appeared to be the same as always, so nobody ever mentioned it."Where have you been, dumbass? You missed the practice match and all of practice last week!" Was the first thing Kageyama said when he met Hinata at the gate, he just responded with "can we walk today? I'm feeling a little tired" and a breathy laugh as he pushed his bike into the bike rack and locked it there. "Fine, but I'm counting this as a win for me"
"I would have totally won!"
"Of course you would have"
***
Hinata had exhausted himself in morning practice to make up for his absence in the last week, so much so that he was sent to the nurses office to rest only 20 minutes into his first class of the day.
***
"Hey Kageyama" Hinata joined Kageyama in their usual lunch spot. "You weren't in classes this morning, someone from your class said you got sent to the nurse."
"Oh! It was nothing, I just didn't get enough sleep, I'm okay now though"
"Are you sick again?"
"No, Kageyama, I told you, I'm fine"
Kageyama just frowned and continued to eat his lunch. He knew something was up but he couldn't figure out what it was, so he left it.
***
From then on, Hinata requested that they didn't race each other for a while, claiming that he'd not slept well the night before and was too tired. Kageyama tried to think nothing of it for the first few times, but after a while he got so used to walking into school with Hinata that it stopped mattering, because they got to talk more about things.
***
"You never came to my house like you said you would. Come tonight"
"Tonight?"
"We've been friends for 6 months Kageyama. You need to come to my house."
"Fine, fine. But not tonight, I have to let my mum know I won't be home and that's too much of a short notice" he reasoned.
***
Kageyama lay on Hinata's floor, breathing heavily."how the fuck do you bike so far twice a day? It doesn't surprise me that you're always tired"
"it's only tiring when you walk"
"That doesn't even make sense dumbass" Hinata laughed softly. "I'll go get us some drinks" Kageyama just nodded before sitting up, looking around Hinata's room.Kageyama was admiring the few volleyball weekly magazines on Hinata's desk when he came across a hospital letter. He frowned, picking it up.
Wait, what was he doing? He shouldn't be going through Hinata's things like this. But why does he have a letter from the hospital? With that thought in his mind, he placed the letter back between the magazines where he'd found it and moved to look out of the window instead.
***
"The sky is pretty isn't it?"
"Huh?"
"When it's starting to get dark, the dark blue mixed with the colours of the sunset"
"Suppose you're right"
"The sky at night always makes me think of your eyes" Hinata spoke distractedly, head turned up to the sky. They'd been stood in Hinata's back garden watching the sun go down for half an hour now, both boys enjoying the comfortably warm evening air as the day gradually got cooler. Kageyama frowned as a strange feeling spread through his chest. The sky at night. His eyes. Why did Hinata like his eyes? They were just boring and dark blue. Hinata's eyes on the other hand, they were a shade of brown he couldn't quite put his finger on, and he found them particularly pretty in sunlight."I prefer your eyes" Kageyama muttered, a quiet nervous tone hidden deep within the sentence. Hinata looked up at Kageyama, "but they're just brown"
Kageyama shrugged, "there's just something about your eyes in the sunlight that gets me every time"
Both boys were glad for the low light as they turned back to look up as the last moments of daylight passed, glad that the other couldn't see the way their faces heated up and were dusted with a faint blush from the others compliment.
