I awoke the next morning to the sound of a little boy whining.

" Why can't I just go? It's just a scrape and a bump on the head! I feel fine!" came the high pitched voice from the bed beside mine.

I turned my head to see a boy about my age perched on the edge of the cot, like he was ready to bolt the second the medic took his eyes off him. He looks familiar, I though, as I observed him further. Blonde, brown eyes, playful smile, kind eyes. Damn, he's the prince, I realized, and I'm in the castle. I couldn't believe my luck. Just a few hours ago I was miserable and now I was sitting in the castle.

After a few strict words and warnings not to leave until he came back, the doctor left, probably heading to his office. The prince, Kaden, turned to look at me.

"Hi, you must be Melody, I'm Kaden," he said, smirking.

I stared, confused, as his smile only grew wider. He seamed to realize my confusion, so he clarified.

" I heard my mom and officer Ledger talking in the halls, they were wondering what to do about the 'orphan Melody Notes'. Are you gonna stay with us? I'd love to have someone my age to play with. Ahren and Eadlyn are so boring sometimes, and Ostens only two," he rambled.

I gaped at him slightly.

"I- I don't really know if I'm staying or not. I guess that's up to your parents," I mumbled uncertainly.

"Well I hope you stay, you seem ok. I don't really know you though, but whatever."

The doors to the infirmary opened, and in walked the queen herself and the Ledgers.

"Hello Hun, how are you feeling?" The Queen asked kindly.

"Better- A lot better actually. Thanks a lot, by the way, for, you know, not leaving me there to freeze to death," I addressed that last part to the Ledgers.

They smiled kindly at me, but there was something in their eyes that worried me. The queen looked between us, then towards her son.

"Why don't you go play in the gardens, Kaden," she said.

He looked at each of us in turn, smiled slightly at me, then turned to his mother.

"Sure," he simply said. "I'll be back later," he mumbled to me on his way out.

The three adults were looking at me. I was getting nervous, every possible scenario playing in my mind, each new one worse than the last.

"We were wondering," started Mrs Ledger, "if you wanted to stay in the castle, with us."

I stared at her, gaping dumbly, as the words echoed in my head. Stay in the castle. I was still trying to process this when officer ledger spoke up.

"Only if you want to, of course, we wouldn't want to keep you here against your will."

I finally seemed to find my voice as I stammered, " Of corse I'd want to stay- but- but how, why- why me?"

"With your current predicament, you don't seem to have anywhere to go... And, well, I've always wanted I daughter." Mrs Ledger mumbled.

A daughter, they want to adopt me. And have me live in the castle?

"I- I'd love to, wow, I never thought, I- wow."

I composed myself. Sat up strait, smiled.

"I would love to, thank you so much."

I leaned forwards and hugged her, a huge smile on my lips.

"So, like, what now? How does this work? Can I call you mom and dad? Do I have a room here? Do I have to wear dresses? Attend classes? Dinners? Parties?" I launched question after question at them, and I saw all three of them smile a little more at my enthusiasm.

"You'll be staying on the third floor, your room will be between the Ledgers and Kaden's. You'll be treated as more than a guest, you're family now, Melody. You can do almost anything you want, just try to stay out of trouble," the queen smiled widely at me.

"And of course you can call us mom and dad, but only if you're comfortable with that," Mrs Ledger added.

I have a new mom and dad, i thought happily. Will mom mind? No. No she won't, she would want me to be happy, as long as I never forget her.

"Your bag is already upstairs in your new room, we can go now if you'd like."

I jumped up, and almost ran to the door, eager to begging my new life in the castle.

This is unreal, I thought, as the three of them gave me a brief tours of the castle as they led me to my room. I can't wait to explore.
