I'd like to say that I have a normal life but, as an orphan kid with dyslexia and ADHD, my life has been anything but normal. It's not like I haven't tried fitting in with everyone else - believe me, I have. It's just kind of hard to fit in when you do weird things and can't explain why you were suddenly able to do it. Things such as not being able to explain why I can't sleep at night yet I can throughout the day. Or always having this natural bond with animals. Little did I know that that was just the tip of the iceberg.
Now I'm at a camp with a bunch of crazy kids, more drama than I've ever witnessed at my old school and a quest that could possibly mean the death of me or one of my newfound friends.
... Maybe I should start at the beginning.
This story begins at the hell that is known as school. Stonewall Academy, an all-girls boarding school in Delaware, to be exact. My parents decided that I should go to this school because it's known for helping kids with ADHD and/or behavioral issues, like me - which is false, by the way. Sure, I have ADHD and yes, I have been known to be more... aggressive towards other kids, but that doesn't mean they had to send me away to a boarding school so they don't have to deal with me. There were plenty of other options that didn't involve sending me away for eight months.
I'm getting off topic again.
I had been going to Wingate for a few years and was finally in the last couple of months of my ninth grade year. It was bittersweet to me. As much as I hated my school, I hated going home even more. My parents just never seemed to care about me, as I explained before. Sure, it could be worse, but I would much rather be around people that seem to care too much than be around people that don't really care at all. Still, there was one person I could always count on. My friend, Juniper. She didn't have to act like she cared, like everyone else at my school. She always showed genuine kindness and made school a little more bearable. She was my best friend. Anyway, as expected, the end of the school year included nothing but tests, projects, and mountains of homework to go along with it. What I didn't expect was a new teacher.
Ms. Chavez. A woman whom I was certain was an actual demon. She was replacing my biology teacher, Mrs. Neumann, who had just retired. The first week she seemed like she was just as sweet as could be. Then things started changing. She started sending kids to the office for no good reason, including me. She would also be incredibly strict with her grading. Even though it was the end of the year, she wasn't preparing us for upcoming tests. It seemed like she was just piling more and more work for us to do. It was insane. And the worst part of it was that nobody else seemed to notice.
"I'm telling you, Juniper, she's evil," I exclaimed, throwing my arms in the air. We were walking down the hallway, on our way to our next class.
"Jamie, don't you think you could be overreacting?" Juniper asked.
"Definitely not. I know I've been wrong with my assumptions in the past, but this time I'm sure. Haven't you noticed? The first week she was here, she was so nice! Now, she's just pure evil."
"Okay, whatever you say, Jay. Now come on, we're going to be late for English."
"Okay fine but just you wait. There's something wrong with her, I know it."
A few weeks passed. Nothing much happened. Ms. Chavez was still a jerk and I still had tons of homework to do every night. That is until finals week had come around. As bad as finals week already is, it just had to start off with biology, aka Ms. Chavez's class.
Ms. Chavez passed out the tests to everyone and told us we could begin. I looked down at my desk and realized that she had skipped me. I raised my hand.
"Yes, Ms. Crossford?" Ms. Chavez asked.
"You didn't give me a test... not that I'm complaining," I muttered.
"Oh, so I did. Come with me so we can get a copy of the test." She stood up and motioned for me to follow her. I gave her a questioning look but followed her anyway. I just wanted to take the test and leave as soon as possible.
Ms. Chavez led me down a hall opposite to the hallway that leads to the copy room. I figured she copied the test to a different copy room so I continued to follow her. That is until she led me to an empty classroom.
"Ms. Chavez, this isn't the copy room," I stated.
Ms. Chavez sighed, "yes, I know that, Miss Crossford."
"We need to go to the copy room to get my test, don't we?"
"Yes, we do, Miss Crossford."
"Then... Why are we in an empty classroom?"
"Do you ever shut that insufferable mouth of yours?" I jumped at the sudden harshness in her voice.
"Excuse me?" I really need to tone down my sass when I get stuck in these situations.
"That's it!" she yelled. The next thing I knew, Ms. Chavez wasn't in front of me anymore. Instead, what looked like a woman with the tail of a serpent, took her place.
I shrieked, "What?! Where's Ms. Chavez? W-what are you?"
The monster chuckled, "Stupid girl. I am Ms. Chavez. I came here to get rid of little brats like you. Now die!" Then, the monster lunged at me.
I screamed, falling back against one of the desks. I did my best to dodge the monster's attacks, yelling for help as I did so. I rolled out of the way as the monster attacked again, hitting a wall in the process of doing so. I cried for help once again, knowing I wouldn't be able to dodge another attack.
Finally, I heard a familiar voice yell my name. "Jamie," Juniper yelled. "Use this!" Then, I felt something land on my arm. I picked it up, finding it was a hair comb.
"A hair comb? How does this help?" I screeched.
"Just press your thumb on the far left jewel!"
"What? Juniper-"
"Jamie, watch out!"
I turned just in time to see the monster lunged at me again. I lurched forward and pressed my thumb on the hair comb. I felt something larger in my hand and looked down to see a bow and arrow in my hand. In that moment, I stopped thinking. The next thing I knew, the monster screamed, falling backward. There was an arrow protruding from its chest. The arrow that was previously laying in my lap. I had killed the monster.
I felt something wrap around my arm. I looked over to see it was the monster's tail. The monster looked down at me and grinned. Then, using the last of its energy, it yanked its tail back. I heard a sickening snap, immediately knowing the monster had broken my arm. I screamed, falling to the ground again. I had never felt that much pain in my life. I didn't know whether it was the pain making me hallucinate or it was actually happening. The monster turned into dust. My vision started to blur. The last thing I knew, before I passed out, was Juniper yelling my name.

Look who finally got around to editing this story! I shouldn't say that I'll publish an edited version once a week. I need to get back on track with writing before I do that. I have way too busy of a schedule right now, so I won't be able to make an accurate writing schedule. I'll try to get the edited chapters out as soon as possible. I will probably delete all of the other chapters so the story won't be too confusing.
Until next time!
