Chapter Recap:

Classes flowed smoothly without any hindrances and before I knew it, it was already dismissal. I hurriedly shoved my things inside my backpack and went outside the classroom. Ahlia was already at our usual meeting spot and we hurried inside the car because I knew that I was going to be an emotional wreck later on. After a few minutes of driving and blasting music, we arrived there. I walked into the open field and let the breeze cool me down before approaching her.

Happy Birthday, Mom.

~*~*~*

A year has passed since "it" happened. This would be the first time she won't be celebrating her birthday with me. It specifically happened on September 18, 2012. I would never forget seeing her limp body and pale face lying at the hospital bed. I shuddered at the thought just thinking about it. I used to have nightmares every night whenever I tried to sleep, just by thinking about it. She's gone. She'll never come back to you, my inner voice would always say. The thought never seemed to leave me even up to now. I guessed I must have spaced out for a long time because I felt an assuring pat at my back. I didn't even realize I was crying until Ahlia handed a tissue to me and I immediately shot a hand to my tear-streaked face.

 I knew my mother wouldn't be happy if she would see me like this. She probably would have given me a cup of her hot chocolate just to calm me down. Just thinking about her would always make me burst into tears back then but I have become stronger since that time.

By now, you are probably wondering what happened to my mother?

Recap:

Everything changed on that snowy evening; my mother and I were having hot chocolate by the fireplace. I was still 17 that time. It was one of the best hot chocolates I have ever tasted my whole life. Nothing could ever beat her hot chocolates. That was practically my guilty pleasure back then. This was always our daily routine whenever it was snowing. I would always remember countless stories and memories we had shared whenever we were sitting by the fireplace. While we were chatting about school and she excused herself to the bathroom, I suddenly heard a thud. I immediately rushed over and saw my mother lying on the floor. Panic and fear started to kick in.

I didn't know what to do at that moment I saw her lying at the floor but I decided to regain my composure. I immediately dialed 911 and within a few minutes after, an ambulance and paramedics came and brought my mother to the hospital.

Having a few minutes chat with the doctor, I discovered that my mother had brain tumor. Then it hit me, I noticed that my mother often had headaches and vomits. She would always excuse herself to the bathroom and I would always sneak up behind her to see why she would always take so long in the bathroom. Why was I so immature to think that it was normal? She had hidden it from me for a long time and I had not bothered to even bring her to a checkup. She had been taking chemotherapy sessions but those sessions didn't help the problem and her body couldn't take it in. I even remember one time I saw some pills hidden under her bed while she was in the kitchen but I just shrugged off the thought, thinking that it was just sleeping pills. Why am I so stupid?

Noises interrupted my thoughts. Suddenly, there were doctors running everywhere and then one of the doctors told me;

"Your mother is in the ICU! She's in emergency!"
