*Nefret's POV*
All of Anubis' actions puzzled me greatly. And I wanted to unravel this mass of knots so that I would truly know this person who was now my husband. It should be wise to start knot by knot.
"Only three questions, Nefret."
What!? I wanted more than that.
"Ten."
"Five. I can't last longer than that."
"Done." I guess rushing things won't help.
"First question. How old exactly are you?"
"I'm about the same age as your yaba. Maybe a millenia or two younger. I was the first jackal created. Ra saw that I was quick and strong so he chose me to guard the route to the underworld."
There was a still moment as I hesitated to ask my second question.
"Anubis, why did you choose me?" It was something that bugged me. I felt that there had to be some catch. There was no way someone like him- a deity- would want a weak girl who couldn't do anything. Now that he ruled out my conjecture that it was because I looked like my sister, I had no clues whatsoever.
"Why? I don't know how to explain that. I'm just fond of you. You're beautiful and I like how you're gentle and innocent. You're... pure in being. Not polluted by anything."
"But I can't wield sand like my siblings. I'm a defect. Don't you..." I wondered whether he knew that I couldn't actually control sand.
"Don't see it in a bad light. An initial weakness breeds benevolence. Only if you're weak will you know to be kind when you're powerful. But if you feel helpless, Nefret, I can share my power with you." Anubis gave my hand a soft squeeze.
Anubis' kind gaze and words reassured me. It turned out well after all. I was born with not an ounce of power but I married a god. With Anubis' protection, I was safer than a guarded diadem. I sidled up closer to him.
"Third question. You said your jackal howls at you. Does your different forms have minds of their own?"
"Not exactly a mnd of their own. They are different aspects of me. The jackal form is my bestiality; the human my... well, humanity- feelings like compassion, the ability to reflect and contemplate; the jackal-headed form is my godhood. In personality, they are variations of me, but still me,"
"I think that is something that I could get used to. Next question, Anubis. I know it's not a comfortable question to ask but... have you slept with other girls before?"
Anubis froze for a second, and in that response already answered my question.
"I have, Nefret. I'm sorry."
"It's okay, I understand." I nodded. I had expected this answer but was still slightly disappointed.
"I hope you won't hate me for this, Nefret. I am a jackal, an animal. I'd have to do it." Anubis placed his hand on mine, giving it an apologetic squeeze.
"You don't have any children, do you?"
"I don't. Gods can't have children unless one of them chooses to. I didn't sleep with any goddess and I didn't want children so I don't have any." Anubis drew me closer in an embrace.
His answer had been gladdening. It meant that I wouldn't have trouble with any of his children.
"I know I've already used up my five questions... but can I ask another one?"
Anubis nodded.
"When was the last time?" It sickened me to consider that Anubis might have held another woman in his arms just one day before our marriage, or worse, yesterday night after he left me.
