Leilani’s POV:

“Set it up!” I shouted as I dribbled the ball down the court. I looked at the score board, we were down by only one point and there was fifteen seconds left. I passed the ball to my team’s point guard, Jasmina, and went to my spot on the court. Ten seconds.

She passed it back to me and I faked going right, but drove left down the center of the key. Six seconds.

I jumped up to shoot but the other team’s center went up to block me so instead of shooting, I passed it to our team’s center, Allie. Four seconds.

She took the shot but it bounced off the rim. Two seconds.

I jumped up, grabbed the rebound, and took the shot while still in the air. Game over.

I had just made the winning shot of the championship game.

My teammates ran over to huge me as we all just up and down. They were all around me shouting “MVP! MVP! MVP! (Most Valuable Player)

As they began to release me, Jasmina called, “Hands in!” we all put our fists in the middle of our huddle and Jasmina yelled, “Leilani on me! One, two, three!”

“Leilani!” my teammates shouted before engulfing me in yet another group hug before going into the locker room.

As we began changing out of our game jerseys and into sweats and our team shirts, our coach began to give up a speech.

She went on and on about what an amazing season this was and how she couldn’t wait for next season to start. She ended by giving the MVP meddle to me as my teammates cheered for me yet again.

After shaking my coach’s hand and hugging my teammates, I walked out of the locker room wearing the meddle proudly around my neck. I walked towards where my sister was sitting, watching the game. She came here from her college, UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles), just so that she could watch my game. Usually, no one would be here to watch me, so it was really great to actually have someone with me.

I noticed that she was talking to a man whom I didn’t recognize. As I got closer, Auburn turned away from the man and smiled at me, “Lei! You were amazing! Why didn’t you tell me you were that good?”

I smiled at her and shrugged. I turned to the man she was talking to and stuck my hand out, “Hi, I’m Leilani Rivera.”

Shanking my hand, he smiled and said, “Nice to meet you, Miss Rivera. I’m Johnathan Baxley.”

My jaw dropped, “Johnathan Baxley? As in, the head coach at Saint Lawrence?”

He nodded as he gestured towards his hat: Saint Lawrence Academy Panthers.

Saint Lawrence Academy is this really amazing and prestigious boarding school in New York. They have one of the best high school basketball teams in all of the United States and have many more titles like that. They’re known for their sports and performing arts. Tuition is crazy expensive, not to mention the fact that the only way to get in is by having an insanely high grade point average, trying out for one of the sports team, or auditioning for one of the performing arts departments.

“Wow! What are you doing out here?”

“I came to watch you, of course!” he said as if it were obvious.

Once again, my jaw dropped, “Me? Why?”

“We’ve heard wonderful things about you Miss Rivera! From your outstanding grades to your incredible talent as a basketball and volleyball player.”
