Adam's POV
I sat in the uncomfortable hospital chair listening to Tessa cry in her moms shirt. I couldn't find myself to cry, when that's all that I wanted to do.
A cleared throat caught our attention. We all looked up to see Colin standing there. "I told the nurse everything and she caved and will let you guys see her. But only one at a time. Charlie's back in there right now but she'll leave, so who wants to go first?"
Me and Tessa looked at each other. "Go Tessa," I said nodding at her. She mouthed 'thank you' to me and got up and followed Colin to Avery's room.
Jake patted my back. "I'm really sorry Adam. This would have never happened if I hadn't been such a jack ass and just let you use my car."
I shook my head, "It's not your fault Jake."
Charlie and Colin came back and sat down. Colin held a broken Charlie to him and Tessa's mom sat silently, occasionally having a tear slide down her cheek.
I had an idea and got up, leaving Jake sitting there with people he didn't know, without a word. I left the hospital, walking until I found a flower shop. Hospital flowers always lost their smell and got the normal hospital smell.
I picked out blue tulips which were tied together by a thin rope. Then I found red and white roses and had the lady put them together. I picked out to glass vases and the lady wrapped them up instead of putting the flowers in them.
I left the place with my hands full and when I got back to the hospital Tessa was back sitting down and she couldn't help but smile when she seen me with Avery's favorite flowers.
Colin brought me to Avery's room and I took a deep breath. Charlie turned around and smiled a little bit at the sight of the flowers. I didn't look at Avery yet but I set the vases down and the flowers. I un wrapped the vases and went into the small bathroom and filled them up with water.
I walked back out and put the flowers in them. Charlie and Colin left, leaving me alone with her. I turned around and took in a sharp breath at the sight of her. She had a tube down her throat, attached to a machine that was breathing for her.
She had cuts on her face and a white wrap around part of her head. The same wrist that was in a bright green cast at one point was back in a cast, only this one was plain white. It was the same with her right leg.
I sat down next to her bed and grabbed her right hand holding it tightly. "Hey Avery...It's Adam. I uh...I went to get you your favorite flowers. I got blue tulips and red and white roses."
I sighed rubbing my thumb across the top of her hand. My built up tears found their release. "Avery please wake up. Please breath on your own. You're strong, I know you are. I know you must want to stay with your parents up there but you'll see them again at one point, but don't leave all of us down here. Avery I think I love you. The day I met you in the nurses office my life changed. Just seeing you for the first time changed me. We became best friends and then we became something more. I got the courage to kiss you and I got the courage to ask you on a date. Then I asked you to be my girlfriend. All I wanted to do then was kiss you and never let you go. Now I'm scared that I might have to let you go."
I wiped my tears and felt eyes on me. I turned my head to see 3 people outside the door staring into the room. Two guys and a girl.
I let go of her hand and stood up. I opened the door and stared at all of them. "Can I help you?"
"Sorry, we just wanted to see how she was doing....We were on the case of the crash."
"Well she's not good at all. As you can see she can't breath on her own, she's in a coma. She's only 16. She lost her parents to a drunk driver and now she might lose her own life to yet another drunk driver. Her best friend breaks down in school at least 3 times a day and I couldn't seem to cry until I seen the state she's in right now. We were on a date and I had just asked her to be my girlfriend. Now she might die all because some jackass decided to drive when he was so drunk he couldn't tell red from green. Now if you don't mind I'd like privacy alone with my girlfriend."
They all left and I went back into her room. I held her hand and rested my head against her arm and cried.
I cried until I had nothing left.
Avery's POV
I was mentally crying. Adam might love me. I was useless. All I could do was sit here and listen to everyone crying. I'm affecting my family and friends.
My parents must be why I can't open my eyes. A part of me wants to stay with them. And just like that a bright light opened up. It was like I was a tiny person in my mind.
This really was like a tv show or maybe a movie. It seems to...cliche. But just like that I found myself walking towards the light where I saw my parents waiting with smiles on their faces.
I smiled too. I kept walking until I was right in front of them. That's when I heard it. The long beep around me and the shouting of Adam.
"Avery! Somebody help!! Somebody please help!! No please Avery, don't do this!"
This had to be a challenge. It was the challenge. The bright light in front of me had my parents holding their hands out to take mine. On the other side, it was dark, but that's where the yelling and the beep was mostly heard.
I looked back at my parents and then back on the other side. I did this once more before my eyes locked with my moms. Then with my dads. I raised my hand to grab my moms, but I stopped.
My parents smiles were slowly dropping. "I-I'm sorry....I'm not ready to leave them yet."
That's how I found myself running away from the bright light and into the darkness.
