It was the morning of May 3rd, school didn't let out for another month. I was looking forward to the end of the school year even more that the past years. One, because I would be moving to Nelson Highschool, home of the Nelson Panthers, and two, because me and my dad could finally go camping. I planned it all out in my head, from the moment we left the driveway to the moment when we came back. I had even packed and unpacked my suitcase at least 7 times, making sure that we had everything that we needed to have the best week ever.
Today is the last day of school and in two days we are leaving to go camping. When I got home Nolan, my Great Dane, greated me. He would be staying with my Aunt Rachel when we left. She had a yard as far as the eye can see and she even had a golden retriever named Eli. Everything was normal, I had a plain bagel and some milk as a snack, that is, until the phone rang. I was stunned, my dad never called the house, so I thought that it was my Aunt cancelling her "dog sitting". I answered it with a simple, "Hello?"
"Hello, my name is Dr. Sam Keen. May I please speak to Nate Crest." I was stunned, first of all because someone had actually called wanting me, not the CEO of the biggest store worldwide, my dad. Second, because a doctor was calling, I knew something was up ever since he said "Doctor."
"This is him." I barely got the words out. I think my voice cracks but my head is racing with a million thoughts of what is happening that I can't remember.
"Your father, Walter, is very ill," I didn't believe him; my dad was perfectly fine this morning. He had a routine that he did every school day and today was no exeption. At 6 a.m. my dad calmly knocks on my door, and in a gentle voice he says, "Hey sport, time to wake up. You have a big day ahead. See you downstairs" and doesn't shut my door until I sit up and stretch. Then, he always takes a shower, I can here the water running and I love the calm, soothing sound it makes. Next, he makes me breakfast; today he made me bacon, my favorite, because it was the last day of 8th grade. Finally, he watches me get on the bus and then heads off to work.
"He has come to the hospital with little symptoms that could lead to something major." Dr. Keen continues.
"Now don't worry, he is in very good hands and being monitored 24/7. We haven't found out quit why he came in coughing up blood, but when we scanned him we figured out why. Nate, we have found cancer cells."
