Chapter Six

Today was Sunday which meant some students would be stumbling off to the campus church to beg for forgiveness of last night discretion. Sadly, I would have to miss today on the count I had an unauthorized meeting with Kerry. After making my bed, I went over to the mirror to fluff out my messy hair. Once that was done, I gave a once over my outfit. I had picked out a pink and black off shoulder top, a pair of shorts, and sneakers. I wasn't in the mood for heels today which would surprise my mother. Walking towards the door, I gave a quick glance at Yuri who was still under her the covers asleep. Opening the door, I exited and headed down the stairs to Kerry's room.

Kerry like most of the athletic students here preferred to be on the first floor. Athletic students have a hard time climbing the stairs after practice. I would hate to see them if the world was about to end. I approached Kerry's room door staring at the mountain of pictures that covered it. Some were of Kerry and other's I'm guessing were her roommate. Someone had drawn devil ears on a picture of Paige and I laughed at that. Raising my fist, I knocked on the door, waiting for someone to answer.

It didn't take long as the door opened to reveal the girl I assumed was Kerry's roommate. She like Kerry and I was of the African American descent. Her hair was braided in singles that fell neatly around her face in a bob. Her eyes were dark brown and a gold star earring was in her nose. Her eyebrows were perfectly arched that raised in shock at the sight of seeing me at her door.

"Hi is Kerry here?" I asked.

The girl gave me a look of confusion and suspicion. She no doubt was more than just roommates with Kerry. She was probably her best friend and the sight of me, someone who've never talked to Kerry asking for her, raised suspicion.

"Where are my manners, I'm Autumn."

"I'm Tay." She said reaching out to shake my hand. "Kerry's not here. She's gone to the morning services and then running."

I nodded. I should have gone to the church first like I started to instead of coming to this girl's door looking like a fool. "Well, I'll probably bump into her in the courtyard then. It was nice to meet you."

Turning on my heels I heard the girl mumble a faint "you too", but I was already gone. If she was anything like Yuri and I, she would be texting Kerry to let her know that I had come by looking for her. Kerry would be on the lookout for me.

I walked through the courtyard enjoying the cool breeze that was graciously given to us today.

"Miss Jones."

I stopped walking and turned to see Headmistress Blake making her way towards me. Even on her off days she was dressed as if this was a school day. From the looks of the pin striped suit she wore, she was just coming from services. I took a quick glance at my watch. Shoot I'm going to miss Kerry. Headmistress Blake finally stood in front of me, her gray hair pulled into a tight neat bun, her lips covered in plum lipstick, white pearls around her neck. She was the epitome of a Headmistress.

"Hello Headmistress Blake, how are you this morning?" I asked putting on my good girl face.

"I am very well thank you for asking." Headmistress Blake said her beady eyes searching my face. "I didn't see you or Miss Hopkins at the morning services this morning."

"Oh I had a paper to finish up and Yuri came in last night sick. Poor thing probably caught something from that young fellow Mark."

Headmistress Blake nodded silently agreeing with me. She disliked Mark more than I did, but her reason was unknown. "Well do not forget Miss Jones, Lisa Andrews will be arriving here this week to measure you for your gown."
