"You lied," Lucifer announces before slurping a spoonful of cereal. Micky looks at him and raises her eyebrows. "You said that I would be happy that those kids are staying with us." Micky moves her plate and rests her elbows on the table with a glare.
"Then pretend that you are happy while they're around. You'd be a horrible Alpha if you didn't." Lucifer narrows his eyes.
"I am a great Alpha. I am letting rogues stay in my home and interact with my pack. They must show loyalty, and if they do that, I will be okay with them joining the pack if that is their wish." Meredith steps away from the top of the stairs with her heart pounding faster than usual. Just don't mess up, she tells herself. And make sure the others don't either. She steps back into her room and closes the door.
"Alpha!" Elliot shouts. He's panting as if he's been sprinting for a while and his eyes are wide in panic. Lucifer gives him his full attention. "A dead body has been found on our land." Lucifer stands up immediately, spilling his cereal while he rushes out the front door. Micky follows closely behind the men.
When they arrive to the scene, Lucifer reaches down and turns the body over while a few guards watch. He immediately tenses and stares down while hiding all emotion from his face.
"Do you know who it is?" Micky asks in a small voice. Her heart pounds in her chest and she can tell that the current situation is not good. Lucifer nods. "Who is it?"
He doesn't hesitate to speak. "That's not important." Lucifer steps away from the body and looks to the guards. "I want a group of men checking every inch of this land. If you catch any new scents, follow them, even if it means leaving our territory. Report back to me this evening." Gabriel nods and motions with his hand for everyone to follow him back to the pack house so they can get a few more recruits. Lucifer then turns to Elliot. "Start a fire."
"Yes Alpha." Micky watches, not saying anything. He just stands in one spot and refuses to look at the body. She swallows as quiet as she can and then slowly heads towards Lucifer.
"You can tell me. There isn't anyone else around." Micky places a hand on Lucifer's lower back and then rests her forehead near the center of his back.
"I'll tell you sometime soon, but not now." Lucifer starts to walk away from Micky's touch but Micky follows him. She doesn't say anything.
When they arrive back at the pack house, Lucifer knocks on Isaiah's door. When he opens, his eyes half open and his hair messy, Lucifer says, "There is a dead body on the east side of our land that I want you to burn. Elliot's starting the fire." That grabs Isaiah's attention, especially since Lucifer and him haven't had much interaction.
"Yes Alpha." He swerves around Lucifer and then flashes Micky a smile before heading downstairs and out the front door. Lucifer watches, unmoving.
"Are you still hungry?" Lucifer switches his attention to Micky. He shakes his head. "Who do you think it was?" Lucifer closes his eyes.
"I have too many enemies to start giving credit to anyone." Lucifer pauses. "But I have a suspicion."
"Who?"
"Bates wasn't here to join our pack. Doesn't mean he committed the crime, but he at least presented an opportunity." Lucifer then opens his eyes and scrunches his nose. "We need Meredith and the others that came with her out of our house, Micky." For once, Micky agrees with Lucifer.
"We should wait until tomorrow, though. I want to watch every single person that came along with Bates, then you can throw them out as you please." They've taken shelter in Isaiah's room, but Lucifer now exits. He nods, accepting Micky's suggestion and she sighs in relief.
"I will investigate as well." Lucifer doesn't elaborate. Micky tilts her head and tries to figure out the exact meaning of his words. Then she starts thinking about everything; the body, their situation etc.
"Why would Bates or anyone else want to kill someone you used to know right now? You haven't done anything in such a long time and it isn't the hunters-they wouldn't do something like this." Lucifer's brain starts coming up with ideas.
"Either it's my old pack or it's because of something I did in the past." Both are reasonable answers. Micky stands still. "But I think it's my old pack." His rough voice lowers to a mumble and Micky has to lean in a little to understand Lucifer's words. This time it's Micky who hesitates.
"Because of the body?" Lucifer nods. "Do you think it stands for something?" Lucifer's eyes meet Micky's.
"Of course it does." His voice is cold but holds light humor. "I'm just not sure what." Lucifer's eyes drop down to Micky's lips and he walks forward, wrapping his warm arms around Micky's small frame. Her breathing shallows and she grips the front of Lucifer's shirt.
"Will we be okay?" Micky asks in a meek voice. Lucifer kisses the side of her head and feelings stir inside of him.
"I'll protect you until my last breath, mate." That's his promise-he'll keep his mate safe for as long as he can.
"Okay. I trust you Lucifer," Micky whispers. And then to herself she murmurs, "I trust the Alpha Rogue."
This book is almost over!!! AH! How crazy is that? I will be editing this book, though.
