Sword Play

We were on our way to our next battle. So I decided to get on with some extra training.

Our train was large and we counted it as our base. It didn't run on tracks like the old fashioned trains it had large wheels that could go on any terrain. It had our rooms, the medical centre, the training room, then planning rooms and a common room, which had a TV and games in it, it also had the dungeons in it. Terra, I think, was the only fighter who had never been in the common room before.

I walked into the training room and took out my sword from my belt and was getting the feel of the weight by twirling it. I was going to train on one of the training robots. The robots all had a setting 1-50. 1 being the lowest and 50 being the highest. I usually trained at 40-50. The lowest of our group trained at 38. The swords we used were called rapiers. They were quite long, thin and very sharp. The guard of the sword that surrounds the hand, all had intricate designs that made the swords unique and beautiful in a way. Some were gold coloured while others were silver. Each of us had our own design of sword. Our group's rapiers were all single-edged, only the first's and second's groups of the enemy used double edged swords. We then used the bottom of the grip of the sword, called the pommel, to knock the enemy out when we win a fight. If the pommel hits the head hard enough then it can knock them out, it works the best my getting them in the temple though.

I walked in and saw Terra training with one of the robots and she was hitting the robot with her sword every few seconds and even using punches and kicks. She was a mixed fighter and an amazing one at that. Her sword stood out as well, as it was a double edged blade and the guard was gold and it weaved around her hand like knots. Protecting her hand and making it harder for her to lose her grip of it.

I watched her hit the robot a few more times, who could barely lift the sword up from all her attacks, let alone block or attack her.

"Are you going to stand there gawking or are you going to train?" she asked me, I didn't like the disrespect she was giving me. She hit the robot again and stepped back, letting the robot try to attack her and she defended herself incredibly well. What I didn't understand though, was how she knew I was there and how she could talk to me. You get so caught up in your fight that you have a very basic idea of what's going on around you but most of your senses are on your opponent. Yet here she was, talking to me like we had walked by each other in a hallway.

"What setting are you on?"

"50, too easy I think." I smirked then, although I was surprised that she was on 50, it sounded like she was showing off by saying it was too easy. I had seen her fight in her trials and a bit if I wasn't fighting anyone in battles but I had never seen her properly fight an opponent, like she was with the robot, "end." the robot powered down. She was breathing heavily and it made me wonder how long she had been training for. She put her sword in her belt.

"Wait, how about training with me for a bit?" I said and she shrugged and took her sword out, twirling it a few times.

"Sure," we went opposite each other, readying ourselves and circled each other, "are you going to make a move or?"

"Ladies first," she rolled her eyes at me and then lunged at me and I quickly blocked, going for her side which she had left open. I wondered why she would leave herself so open if she had so much experience. But then, as I went for her side, she blocked me quickly and easily with her sword, hooked her foot behind my knee and took my leg out from under me. I was on the floor and she held her sword to my face; reaching down and pulling my sword from my hand and held that to my face as well. Her expression remained blank through all of this. I stared at her in shock. She then took the swords away and put it in her belt, putting her hand out to help me up and I took it and stood up. She then handed my sword back to me. I had never been beaten before, ever. That's why I was leader of this team, yet this girl, who joined us under a year ago beat me within half a minute. I continued to stare at her in shock but her expression was still blank.

"Too easy," she said.

"Me? Too easy?" I couldn't believe that she had told me that. I wasn't too easy. I looked at her and my shock was clear on my face. Hers continued to be blank.

"Yes." She said and I scoffed at her. Just because she got lucky.

"You just got lucky." She snickered slightly at me. Did this girl really have such a lack of respect?

"Sure I did," she scoffed. "Like..."She then quickly shut her mouth.

"What were you about to say?"

"It doesn't matter. Look I'm sorry for disrespecting you. I'm not used to being respectful. Don't ask me why, I'm just not." she was hiding something.

"Okay I won't." I knew there was something she was hiding but I wasn't risking my secret because of curiosity. No one needed to know about my past and I didn't want them knowing, either.

"I'm sorry again General Davies," I almost laughed at the General Davies thing, no one calls me that when we're on base.

"Jake," I corrected.

"Okay. I'm sorry Jake." I noticed a slight blush in her cheeks, which almost made me laugh again because she had kept the same blank expression on her face the whole time. If she didn't reply, would have thought that she was a statue. Yet she blushed.

"I haven't been called that on base since the new doctor called me it over a year ago." she seemed to pale slightly at that, which again confused me.

"Doctor Carter?" I nodded. Doctor Graham Carter. He arrived about half a year before Terra and he was one of the best doctors we had.

"Yeh. The first time I needed to be checked out he called me General Davies." I smirked because, like her, he had the same respect yet lack of respect for me. They both called me General Davies but then would talk to me like we were very close friends. They also had a similar look to them. There were a few differences though, firstly Terra rarely showed emotion; Graham was usually quite happy but serious. He, like her, was a very hard worker. But she seemed to work like it was her job, her life; he seemed to work because he loved it. There was a coldness to her, which I had never seen in him and her eyes were brown while his eyes were blue. But they both had similar blond curly hair, just his was shorter, and their faces were a similar shape and they generally looked quite similar.

"Oh," she said, "well I have to go now because I've been training for about 4 hours and I need a shower. So I'll see you later then Jake," she gave me a quick smile that was almost a proper smile but not fully. It didn't reach her eyes but then she quickly returned to a blank expression and walked out. I started practicing with the training robot at 40 to start. I started an attack, hitting the robot a good few times and then going defensive as well. My left was always my weaker side and so I trained with that to try and build it back up to like it was before. Before I had joined this group. Before everything happened.

I continued to raise the setting for the next 2 hours and was still working on my left side. Until, I thought about how fast and frequently Terra was hitting the robot. She had been amazing, I had never seen such an experienced fighter.

I then felt a sharp pain in my side.
