Global warming combined with radiation from bnl has made earth unfit for living. Humans and all of the objects leave earth on a huge spaceship called the 'axiom'. All except for the wall-Es.
The wall-Es are machines made to clean up the earth while humans are gone. However, there was one flaw in their plan: a power source. All of the wall-Es except for one have died out because they lacked a power source. The reason that the one wall-e survived was because he had found a power source: human love. By watching the same human movie over and over again for about seven hundred years, this last wall-e survived.
As we see in the movie, aboard the axiom, machines have taken over our lives. Bnl gives us everything we could want. We are reduced to large lumps of flesh under their pamperment.
Though we do return to earth and plans begin to grow, we are in small numbers, too small to completely repopulate the earth.
Then we remember the animals.
